You should always expect that people are very busy, and the possibility of them reserving a specific date for someone else is high. You should never assume that a person do not have anyone else to look out for, especially those who you may consider as very friendly individuals. Therefore, the need to reserve a specific date from their calendar is necessary.

When thinking of sending Save the Date Cards you need to think about where the person lives. To be more practical, you should only send these cards to people who are far from where you are from. These are the people who might need to set up the appointment first because they may need to arrange certain accommodations before they can say yes. That is why it might also be best if you send these to different guests as early as six months before the said event. Such a time frame will give them ample amount of time to make preparations in case they say yes. Therefore, the time of sending is also important.

In addition, you may also indicate the event in the Save the Date Cards that you are sending. This will inform the recipient what they should be preparing for. ...
... Without the event mentioned in the card, you will be leaving the receiver hanging regarding what to prepare for the event. This may cause them to deny your invitation, though it may be less likely because they can call you if needed. That is why you should not forget to put your name as sender so that they may ask additional information that you may have not been able to indicate in your Save the Date Cards. Therefore, you should make sure that all the information that is in your cards should be complete before you send it over to your different guests.

Before sending out these cards, you should at least know who your possible guests are. List them down beforehand. This will help you enumerate the number of people you are looking to invite, though this is not yet the final guest list. At least you already have an idea how many people are going to attend beforehand.

Aside from the number of people who you are planning on to invite, you should also make sure that the venue is already set. Finalize the venue before you send these cards out so that they already have an idea where it is going to be held. This might become an important consideration whether or not they will be going. If they are going, it is also a good chance to look for specific places to stay in while they are within the area. Therefore, knowing the venue will give your guests a chance to make certain arrangements for their stay.

You should also make sure that you follow-up these Save the Date Cards with an actual invitation. Send only to those who have agreed on going so that you will not be wasting as much money as you should.

Save the Date Cards is a good way of informing several people regarding an upcoming event. Whether or not it is necessary will be up to you. However, reserving such a date may become useful in making sure that you have a final guest list in hand once the time it is needed comes around.
