Introduction

Goddess Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity, and one of the most widely worshipped deities across India. Consort of Lord Vishnu, she represents not only material abundance but also generosity, grace and well-being. Her presence is invoked at beginnings of every kind, from new homes to new ventures.

Because of these auspicious associations, Goddess Lakshmi is a popular choice as a corporate gift, offering clients, employees and partners a meaningful token of good fortune. Her idol is available in brass and bronze, crafted in the traditional South Indian style. Discover more at Gold Plating Art Studio.

1. Who Is Goddess Lakshmi and What Does the Form Represent?

Lakshmi is usually shown seated or standing on a fully bloomed lotus, with four hands. Two hands hold lotus flowers, symbolising purity and spiritual growth. One hand pours out gold coins, representing wealth shared with devotees, while another is raised in blessing. In the Gajalakshmi form, two elephants pour water over her, symbolising royal authority and abundance. Her serene expression reflects the ...
... calm and steady nature of true prosperity.

2. The Legend of Lakshmi and the Churning of the Ocean

According to the Puranas, the sage Durvasa once cursed Indra, and the gods gradually lost their strength and fortune. To restore it, the devas and asuras churned the ocean of milk, an event known as Samudra Manthan. Lakshmi emerged from the ocean seated on a lotus. Among all those present, she chose Lord Vishnu as her consort by placing a garland around him. Her arrival restored prosperity to the universe.

3. The Ashta Lakshmi Forms

Lakshmi is worshipped in eight forms, collectively called Ashta Lakshmi. They are commonly listed as Adi Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi and Vidya Lakshmi. Each form represents a distinct blessing, including wealth, grain, courage, victory and knowledge. Together they present prosperity as a complete life of well-being rather than money alone.

4. Lakshmi in Business and Trade Traditions

Lakshmi has long held a central place in Indian commercial life. Merchants traditionally begin the new financial year around Diwali with Chopda Pujan, a ceremony in which new account books are worshipped in her name. Many business communities honour her at the opening of shops, offices and new ventures. This tradition explains why she is regarded as the presiding goddess of trade, honest earnings and shared success.

5. Lakshmi Festivals and Mantra

Goddess Lakshmi is honoured on many occasions. Diwali is her most celebrated festival, with Lakshmi Puja performed on the main night. Varalakshmi Vratham is observed on the Friday before the full moon in the Shravana month, and Akshaya Tritiya and Navaratri are also dear to her devotees. Fridays are especially associated with her, and the mantra “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah” is widely chanted in her praise.

Conclusion

Goddess Lakshmi embodies a vision of prosperity rooted in virtue, generosity and grace. Her legends, her many forms and her enduring place in business tradition make her one of the most cherished deities, and her image remains a timeless symbol of good fortune.
