Introduction

Palani Murugan, worshipped as Dandayudhapani, is one of the most beloved forms of Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu. He is shown as a renunciant who gave up royal splendour for wisdom, standing alone on a hilltop with only a staff in his hand. For millions of devotees, Palani is a place of humility, surrender and quiet strength.

Palani Murugan is also a much admired subject in South Indian metal art, and his form in idol brass is valued for its simple, graceful lines and devotional presence.

1. Who Is Palani Murugan and What Does the Form Represent?

Palani Murugan stands in the posture of an ascetic. He has a shaved head, wears only a loincloth and holds a danda, the staff that gives him the name Dandayudhapani. Unlike the royal and warrior forms of Murugan, this image carries no crown, jewels or peacock and spear in the foreground. It represents detachment, self-restraint and the idea that true wealth lies in knowledge. Devotees often describe him as Murugan in his most humble and approachable form.

2. The Legend of the Fruit and the Hill of Palani

According to tradition, the ...
... sage Narada brought a special fruit of wisdom to Lord Shiva. To decide which son should receive it, Shiva proposed a contest to circle the world. Murugan set out on his peacock, while Ganesha walked around his parents, declaring that they were his entire world. Ganesha won the fruit. Disappointed, Murugan left Kailash and settled on the hill at Palani. Shiva and Parvati came to console him and affectionately called him “pazham nee,” meaning “you are the fruit,” from which the name Palani is said to come.

3. Bhogar and the Navapashanam Idol

The main idol at Palani is traditionally believed to have been created by the Siddha Bhogar, one of the great mystic sages of Tamil tradition. It is said to be made of navapashanam, a rare composition of nine substances prepared through long and careful alchemical practice. The deity’s presence is considered so powerful that this unusual idol has remained a subject of reverence and wonder for generations. Bhogar’s connection with Palani has made the hill an important place for Siddha tradition as well.

4. Palani Temple and Festivals

The Palani Murugan Temple stands on Sivagiri hill in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. Pilgrims climb the long flight of steps, while others use the winch train or ropeway. The temple is known for its Panchamirtham offering, and its major festivals include Thaipusam, Panguni Uthiram and Skanda Sashti. During these occasions, devotees arrive carrying kavadis and walk long distances in fulfilment of vows.

5. Palani in Devotional Literature

Palani is the third of the Arupadaiveedu, the six celebrated abodes of Lord Murugan, where it is known as Thiruvavinankudi. The saint-poet Arunagirinathar sang of Palani in his Thiruppugazh, a collection of songs admired for their rhythm and devotion. Tamil devotional poetry has long described Palani as a place where the seeker finds peace after the pursuit of worldly desires.

Conclusion

Palani Murugan reminds us that wisdom and humility are greater than power or possession. His legend, his unique idol and his ascetic form continue to draw pilgrims and art lovers alike, making him one of the most cherished images of Lord Murugan.
