Introduction

The Ashta Bhairavar are the eight fierce manifestations of Lord Shiva, honoured as guardians of the eight directions and protectors of devotees from fear, obstacles and negative forces. Rooted in Shaiva tradition and widely revered across Tamil Nadu and Kashi, these eight forms together represent divine justice, vigilance and the power of time itself.

For devotees and art lovers, the Ashta Bhairavar set is a striking composition of eight distinct forms in one ensemble, available in idol brass and bronze at Gold Plating Art Studio.

1. Who Are the Ashta Bhairavar and What Do the Forms Represent?

Bhairava is the terrifying yet protective aspect of Shiva, and the name is often explained as the one who removes fear. The eight forms are Asitanga, Ruru, Chanda, Krodha, Unmatta, Kapala, Bhishana and Samhara Bhairava.

Each Bhairava is said to preside over a direction and to be paired with one of the Ashta Matrika goddesses, which shows how the divine masculine and feminine energies work together to guard the cosmos.

2. The Symbolism Behind the Bhairava Form

Bhairava is commonly ...
... shown with a trident, a drum called damaru, a noose and a skull bowl, and is accompanied by a dog as his vahana. The trident stands for authority over the three states of existence, and the damaru for the primal sound of creation.

The dog represents loyalty and alertness. Together these emblems present Bhairava as a guardian who watches over time, boundaries and the inner journey from fear to fearlessness.

3. Mythology and Origins of Bhairava

According to tradition, when Brahma boasted of his greatness, Shiva manifested Bhairava from his own wrath. Bhairava removed Brahma’s fifth head with a fingernail, which ended the pride of the creator.

The skull stuck to his hand and he wandered as a mendicant until he reached Kashi, where the skull fell away. Because of this, Bhairava is hailed as the guardian of Kashi. The eight forms are also described in Puranic accounts as the powers who stood against the demon Andhaka and the forces of darkness.

4. Bhairava Temples and Festivals

The Kalabhairava Temple in Kashi is the most celebrated shrine of the Lord, and pilgrims there often seek his permission before concluding their visit to the city. In Tamil Nadu, Bhairava shrines are found in many Shiva temples, and the Adhiyamankottai temple near Dharmapuri is well known for Kalabhairava worship.

Kalashtami, observed on the eighth day of the waning moon each month, is dedicated to Bhairava. The most important occasion is Bhairava Ashtami, also called Kalabhairava Jayanti, which falls in the Tamil month of Karthigai and is marked with night vigils and special abhishekam.

5. Kalabhairava Ashtakam and Bhairava Mantras

Adi Shankara composed the Kalabhairava Ashtakam, a beloved eight verse hymn praising Bhairava as the lord of Kashi and the remover of sin and fear. It is chanted widely on Ashtami days.

Devotees also recite the simple mantra “Om Kalabhairavaya Namah” with focus and discipline. Worship of the Ashta Bhairavar is traditionally associated with courage, protection and freedom from fear.

Conclusion

The Ashta Bhairavar embody the protective fury of Shiva, a force that destroys ego and fear so that wisdom can rise. Their story, from the humbling of Brahma to the guardianship of Kashi, shows why these eight forms remain among the most respected deities of Shaiva devotion.
