Wedding Photography In Harsh Light
Everyone loves outdoor weddings. They are more spacious and lively, but the harsh light from the sun can negatively influence your wedding photographs which are going to serve as an unforgettable compendium of memories for the rest of your life. Do not let the sun come in your way of making the best of the bright summer day.
Some tips to never to forget when photographing weddings when the sun is shining with all its might:
1. Hit the shaded areas in the end.
As a photographer it is always enticing to shoot the subjects in wide blind spots, but when the space is limited, these places should always be kept for the end as they will result in majority of the most illuminated images. Let the couple be at ease and give them time and space to relax before you make them proceed to your favorite snapping locations. Large trees and other objects are bound to block majority of the harsh light from the sun, still they can create a nice surreal glow effect from behind if the camera is properly used.
2. Remember, sun should always be at the back.
In case the sunlight cannot be avoided and ...
... it is absolutely necessary to shoot pictures in direct sunlight, the snaps should be taken such that the sun is behind the subjects. The bright rays from the sun will affect the reaction of the subjects and at the same time bust the details from the photograph, like the intricate embroidery on the brides dress.
3. Using natural reflectors for better photography.
Time and time again it should be emphasized that on outdoor weddings photographers should mainly rely on natural reflectors. Natural reflectors are always present in the environment and help in deflecting light from the sun onto the subjects. So it is not direct. Such reflectors will add a warm glow onto the subjects and make the pictures seem surreal as if a mystical light source is giving out a radiant glow. Another positive factor for using these reflectors is that you can keep the expressions of the subjects intact, without making them squint just like they would if directly faced with the sun.
These are the three most important tips to keep in mind when shooting an outdoor wedding on a bright day. There are always many other ways and options to exploit the light from the sun. These tips will ensure that the bright and harsh rays of the sun do not affect the warm glow of your wedding album. For more tips on wedding photography, stay tuned to Amy Steed Photography.
