Framed antique prints are a popular way to create a vintage feel in a room. Hanging antique fish prints and bird prints is a simple way to embellish a lodge-style atmosphere in a country log cabin. Arranging botanical prints, such as ferns, can be an easy way to give your kitchen a calming, soothing green atmosphere. While millions hang groupings of antique prints for decoration, all are faced with the inevitable decision of choosing to purchase original antique prints, or opting to use reproduction antique prints. Although the dilemma is hardly debated by interior decorators, the decision made has important consequences.

While some believe antique original prints possess a superior visual character quality that cannot be duplicated, many other observers find it hard to differentiate an antique original from a corresponding reproduction print. The discrepancy of opinions is primarily due to the condition of the individual original. The quality and amount of digital restoration and enhancement done to a reproduced image prior to printing can also make an enormous impact on how the two compare. On the other hand, some things, ...
... such as the anitque appearance of aged paper, cannot be reproduced in entirety. Up until the 1990's there was almost no question as to if an original antique looked more appealing than the corresponding reproduction print. Unless an antique style print press was the means of printing the reproduction, the visual details were nearly impossible to replicate. It wasn't until our age of computer technology that antique prints were able to be scanned or photographed, enhanced, and printed with such astonishing detail that the reproductions rival the corresponding originals. In some situations, spectators report reproduced prints to have more visual appeal than the originals from which they were derived.

While the debate can seem endless, there are very few who argue on the significant price difference. Antique originals are overwhelmingly more expensive. In light of this, the question is often asked - if many viewers would have a difficult time distinguishing between the two, one must wonder, is the price really justifiable? In reality, it depends on the individual. For many pro interior designers and DIY home decorators, the answer is no. Even so, to a variety of collectors of antique art, the vintage authenticity of a work of art that has aged for hundreds of years is extremely appealing. Another aspect of original antique prints is the investment value of some rare prints. Like any collectable, the values of antique originals can increase in the long run. For those who seek value and collectability more than they do decoration, this is something to consider. Still, for a large portion of interior decorators it is much more cost efficient to look for quality reproductions.

Cost efficiency is not the only advantage to decorating with reproduced antique prints. They also offer flexibility and customization options that assist in fitting a unique work of art into an already well decorated room. Some print reproduction companies will offer prints in an assortment of framing and matting options. If trying to stay on a tight budget, look for publishers that print in Standard-Sizes: (11"x14", 8"x10", 5"x7"). Because these sizes are widely used, one can look for low cost frames. The ability to order a print in Black & White or Sepia is also a decorating advantage. Although only some publishers offer these options, seeking out those who do may be an essential factor to spicing up a room with the desired effect without compromising the present theme.
