Some of the major historic civilizations include the Olmec, Mayan, Aztec, Toltec, Zapotec, and Spanish among others. A fuse of these resulted to diverse cultural orientation that defines its modern socio cultural setting. One notable weapon in the Mayan culture is the hornet bomb that was used made from the hornet nest and used to attack enemies in the earlier centuries. The first form of civilization was the Olmec dating back 1400 to 300 BC. It was within this period that the Olmec saw the eastern part of Mexico lined with countless cities and historical sculpture of the colossal heads. During the Zapotec civilization at around 600 BC to 800 AD, there were establishment of great cities along the southern part of the state.

Out of the million population in Mexico, the smallest percentage is represented by the Spanish descents; creoles. The state was under Spaniards for more than three centuries, after which the locals rebelled against Spaniards led by one Father Hidalgo in 1810.
