We all love to watch photographs of kids, but ask the photographer about the photo shoot, and he’s sure to have stories of how frustrating it is to shoot children. Needless to say, you’ve got to have a natural fondness for children and they need to be comfortable around you. Here are few tips that I have found to be of great help, throughout my career as a baby photographer in San Francisco.

Don’t try to get children to smile, because children cannot force a smile. And even if they do, it seems very unnatural. Children always smile through their eyes and expressions. If you’re planning to make a child smile or laugh do so naturally through your behavior.

And if you’re looking to make a child laugh or even smile, he or she should trust you. When you reach the place, don’t just start with your work, spend some time playing with them. Children love adults who are funny. Make sure you’ve tuned your funny streak before you start the shoot.

Children also love to see their photos in the camera. As you click, show them to children an also ask for inputs from them. They’re sure to open up and will ...
... come up impromptu poses.

Another hindrance when photographing children are mothers. While its’ true that mothers know their children best, they tend to fuss a lot and often take over your job. Try and make mothers understand that you are aware of what you are doing and can get a good shot even without the fuss.

Every newborn photographer in San Francisco worth his salt will tell you that when it comes to photographing babies, it’s very important to go with the flow. In fact many of them are known to dance and sing to get a child to stop crying.

When photographing babies, it’s best to get down to their level. Lying down and getting close to the child can be difficult in terms of getting the right focus, and will need patience. But if you’ve learned to do this well, the photographs are sure to be exemplary.

Another aspect that’s very common in newborn photography, is concentrating on a single part of the body. For example, taking picture of the tiny little feet or even pictures of the child holding the parent’s hand are great stills and the parent is sure to cherish these for a lifetime.

So the next time, you’ve been asked by a friend or family member to take photos of their kids, don’t hesitate. As earlier said, just go with the flow!
