Recognize the board before importing a familiar strategy
Janggi is often introduced as Korean chess, but that short description does not explain its movement rules. It is played on the intersections of a nine-by-ten board, and the palace lines and the routes of individual pieces matter when deciding what is legal. Experience with another chess variant can be a starting point for curiosity rather than a substitute for checking the rules.
Our 장기 project brings janggi to a browser with an illustrated guide. The current site offers eight AI levels, online play and daily bakbo problems. A learner can use the guide to answer a movement question and then choose a practice format that fits the next question.
Describe one route in the current position
For a small exercise, select a piece and identify the route needed for its intended move. Notice the intervening intersections and the pieces occupying them. Cannons make this especially visible because their movement depends on a screen and on specific restrictions. The palace also contains lines that require attention. Instead of relying on a general impression that a piece can move in a certain direction, consult the rules and connect the explanation to the board in front of you.
Separate a legal reply from a useful reply
Once a candidate move is legal, ask what it accomplishes. Does it answer a threat, protect a piece or open a route? Then consider what it stops doing. A piece moved to attack may have been defending a different square. Reviewing both effects gives the decision a more precise description.
An AI game offers a sequence of positions in which to investigate these interactions. A bakbo problem provides a narrower tactical task. These formats are useful for different purposes; completing one kind of exercise does not automatically resolve a question about another.
Leave with an observation you can verify
At the end of a short session, record one change that affected your plan. Name the piece, the route and the reply you did not expect. This is an organizational suggestion rather than a promise of improvement or a claim that one method guarantees wins. A specific observation is easier to revisit than a general instruction to think harder.
