Webmahjong: Separate The Ruleset, The Hand Shape And The Decision

Choose a ruleset before choosing a move
Games that use mahjong tiles do not all ask the player to do the same thing. A solitaire matching puzzle uses a visible layout, while four-player riichi mahjong involves drawing, discarding and building a qualifying hand. Knowing which game is open is the first useful step for a newcomer.
Our ้บป้›€ web project provides browser-based four-player mahjong alongside a Japanese rules guide. The current homepage offers free play, ranked play, tournaments and a score-difference mode. Other pages introduce variants such as three-player mahjong and a smaller-hand game. Those variants should be understood on their own terms rather than treated as identical practice.
Keep the first exercise narrow
For a first session, identify the tile families and follow the draw-and-discard sequence. Then choose one question to investigate. Is the hand close to a complete shape? Does it have a qualifying yaku? Is a discard still available to claim under the relevant rules? These questions concern different parts of the game, so answering one does not ...
... automatically answer the others.
The site guide separates tile recognition, hand structure, calls, yaku, scoring and defense. A player can consult the relevant section when a specific uncertainty appears. For example, bonus tiles affect scoring but do not by themselves supply a qualifying yaku. Checking that distinction is more useful than memorizing a score table without understanding when a hand can win.
Review a decision, not only the outcome
Before beginning, look at the available settings, including match length, CPU strength and rule options. Keep those settings consistent when comparing practice sessions. A different ruleset can change what a reasonable decision means.
After a hand, write one observation about the choice that was difficult. Describe the tiles involved and the rule or tradeoff you were unsure about. This is a suggestion for organizing practice, not a promise of better scores. The purpose is to turn a vague impression into a question that can be checked against a rule and a visible hand.
