Introduction

Pudhan Bhagavan, also known as Budhan or Budha, is the Navagraha deity who governs the planet Mercury and presides over intelligence, speech, learning and commerce. Among the nine celestial lords worshipped across Tamil Nadu,

Pudhan is regarded as the giver of wisdom, clarity of thought and skill in communication. His form, carved with serene grace in idol bronze, remains a cherished image in temples and devotional collections. This article explores his story, mythology and sacred traditions as preserved by Idol Bronze.

1. Who Is Pudhan Bhagavan and What Does the Form Represent?

Pudhan is depicted as a calm, youthful figure associated with the colour green, the emerald and the Wednesday of each week. In traditional iconography he is shown seated on a lion or in a chariot drawn by lions, holding a sword, a shield and a mace, while one hand offers a gesture of blessing. These attributes reflect the union of sharp intellect, protective strength and grace. Mercury is the swiftest planet, and Pudhan likewise stands for quick understanding, eloquence and adaptability, qualities that guide ...
... scholars, traders, writers and students.

2. The Birth of Pudhan: Chandra, Tara and the Tarakamaya War

According to the Puranas, Pudhan is the son of Chandra, the Moon god, and Tara, the wife of Brihaspati, the preceptor of the gods. Chandra carried Tara away, and the dispute grew into the great conflict known as the Tarakamaya war, in which the devas and asuras took opposing sides. The creator Brahma stepped in, and Tara was returned to Brihaspati. She was already carrying a child, who was born radiant and brilliant. The infant was named Budha, meaning the wise one, in recognition of his extraordinary intellect from birth.

3. Pudhan, Ila and the Lunar Dynasty

Pudhan later married Ila, the daughter of Manu, and their union is celebrated as the root of a great royal lineage. Their son Pururavas became a celebrated king and an ancestor of the Chandravamsha, the Lunar Dynasty, from which many heroes of Indian epic tradition descend. Through this lineage, Pudhan is remembered not only as a planetary deity but also as a founding figure whose wisdom shaped generations of rulers and sages.

4. Pudhan Temples and Navagraha Worship

The most sacred shrine associated with Pudhan is the Swetharanyeswarar Temple at Thiruvenkadu near Sirkazhi, where he is worshipped as one of the Navagraha deities and as a bestower of knowledge. Devotees offer green gram, green cloth and tulsi, and they visit on Wednesdays seeking success in studies, business and speech. In Navagraha shrines across Tamil Nadu, Pudhan is placed in his designated position and circumambulated along with the other eight planetary lords, as prescribed by the tradition.

5. Pudhan Mantra and His Place in the Navagraha Tradition

The Budha Beeja mantra, “Om Bram Brim Brom Sah Budhaya Namah,” is traditionally chanted to invoke his blessings for clarity and learning. In the Navagraha system, Pudhan is considered a gentle and benefic planet whose influence strengthens when supported by wise counsel and disciplined study. His position as the swift messenger among the planets also links him with writing, mathematics, trade and diplomacy, making him a patron of every field that depends on thought and expression.

Conclusion

Pudhan Bhagavan embodies intellect, eloquence and the joy of learning. From his dramatic birth to his role in founding the Lunar Dynasty and his sacred seat at Thiruvenkadu, his story continues to inspire devotion across generations. Remembering him with reverence is a reminder that true wisdom is the finest gift one can seek.
