Darwin, August 14, 2025 – Australia’s rising cricket star Mitchell Owen has been ruled out for at least 12 days after suffering a concussion during the second T20 International against South Africa in Darwin. The injury happened when South African pacer Kagiso Rabada delivered a fierce bouncer that struck Owen on the helmet.

While Owen initially tried to continue batting, Australia’s medical team conducted immediate concussion checks and later confirmed symptoms, enforcing the International Cricket Council’s concussion protocol. This mandatory rest period means Owen will miss the T20I series decider as well as the opening two ODIs in Cairns and Mackay.

Injury Troubles for Australia

Owen’s absence adds to Australia’s growing injury list:

Matt Short – side strain

Lance Morris – back soreness

In response, the selectors have called up Aaron Hardie, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Cooper Connolly to strengthen the squad for the remainder of the Australia vs. South Africa series.

The Importance of Concussion Protocols in Cricket

Cricket has come a long way in prioritizing ...
... player safety. In the past, head knocks were often shrugged off, but the sport has evolved with strict guidelines to protect athletes. Under the ICC rules:

Any player diagnosed with a concussion must rest for at least 12 days.

Teams can bring in a concussion substitute to maintain balance.

Players must pass neurological assessments before returning to action.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has publicly praised these measures, stating, “No match is worth risking a lifetime of health. The protocols keep players safe, and that’s the way it should be.”

Impact on the Series

With the series evenly poised, Owen’s injury forces Coach Andrew McDonald to rethink Australia’s middle-order balance and bowling combinations. The replacements will have an opportunity to prove themselves under high-pressure conditions against a strong South African side.
