“Sindhudurg – Land of Beaches, Forts and Waterfalls” Sindhudurg is a famed tourist destination in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. Acres and acres of picturesque beach land stretch out on the West coast of India along beautiful seashore. Orchards of the world famous alphonso mango, cashew and jamuns make beautiful scenery along with the natural hills and mountains. Sindhudurg is also popular for its beaches, pilgrim sites, backwater and waterfalls. Sindhudurg also houses the famous Sindhudurg fort built in the 17th century and the Padmagarh fort. In days when the water is clear the sea bed can be seen down to a depth of twenty feet. Tourists from across the world visit Sidhudurg throughout the year. Amboli Hill station is a popular destination of Sindhudurg. It is a pleasant hill resort surrounded by dense forests and offers s a beautiful panoramic view of a big part of the Konkan coast. A number waterfalls flow down the hill and make for a magnificent sight in the monsoons. Various strategic viewpoints such as Purvicha vas, Mahadevgad point and Kawalesat point offer birds eyes views of the terrain below. The Nagartas waterfall makes for a beautiful and scenic treat for the eyes. The historical Botanical garden atop Amboli provides for beautiful walks amidst greenery and fresh air. Karvi trees dot the mountain ranges and when it flowers once in every seven years it makes the mountain scenery come alive with beauty. Five kilometers away from Amboli tourists can enjoy fishing and angling in the Hiranykeshi River. The River site is also known as a pilgrimage site for Shiva devotees. The caves near the river are also famed for holding seven ponds and a mysterious throne in it. The Napne waterfall is a must visit for swimmers as it makes for a delightful swim. The waterfall is safe and clean. Visitors can also walk to the origin of the waterfall or simply sit and marvel at the surrounding beauty and scenery which is home for rare and exotic birds. Hornbill can often be sighted here. Sindhudurg is also famed for its many beaches. The Walawal creek is delightful as it offers the view of both the setting sun in the West and the rising moon in the East as reflections on the water at the same time. A visit to Sindhudurg is incomplete without a visit to the Sindhudurg fort. The fort was built in the 17th centuey by Marathas and still houses some families in it today. Visitors can enjoy the water reservoirs, a hidden passage, a hand and footprint of Shivaji and a Shivaji temple, the only one in the world. Sindhudurg is well connected by roads and rails. Another famous temple is The Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy Temple. It is located at a height of about four hundred and fifty seven meters on the southern bank of River Krishn. It is a major pilgrim spot in Srisailam. This temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples in the country. According to Hindu legend the hills of Srisailam have gateways leading to the four cardinal directions. The four gateways are Tripuranthakam, Siddavatham, Alampur and Umameshwaram. The four gates have different Gods and Goddesses presiding over them. There are also four secondary gateways. The Akka Mahadevi Cave is also a place of interest. It houses a natural Shiva ling and was believed to have been worshipped by the Guru Mhadev in the 12th Century. The caves can be reached via motorboats. The artificial Srisailam Dam is situated amidst beautiful scenery and natural greenry and makes for a popular site for tourists. It is five hundred and twelve meters across Krishna River. Animal lovers can also visit one of the largest tiger reserves in India, the Srisailam Sanctuary. A number of wild animals like tigers, leopards and cheetahs can be seen here. Crocodiles are also breed here. The Sanctuay is covered in forest and bamboo thickets. The Nallamala forest ranges with densely wooded trees and diverse flora and fauna lies close to the Srisailam hills.The trails here provide excellent trekking and hiking opportunities. The best time to visit is from November to March. It can be reached by buses or cars from Hyderabad. The nearest railway stations are Markapur, Vinukonda, Kurnool and Guntur-Hubli. Tarkarli – A Land of Silver Beaches Tarkarli is a famous tourist destination in the coastal plains of Maharashtra, India. It is well knownf for its beautiful and clean silver beaches which stretch for miles. The “shuru” trees dotting the seashore, the wide rivers, tiny hamlets and beautiful sailboats make the scenery of Tarkarli picture perfect. The village is also famed for its festival hosted during ramnavami every year with dramas in the Marpurush temple. The festival draws a lot of crowds from nearby villages and other States as well. Fishing can be enjoyed here throughout the year and dolphins can also be sighted. For all its beauty and grandeur it is rightfully titled the “Queen Beach” of Sindudurg. Scuba diving here will lead you to the beauty hidden beneath the Arabian Sea. Tourists can also enjoy special Malvani food with fish items such as “kombadi vada” being a specialty. Tourists can also visit the Sindhudurg fort built in the 17th century. Five kilometers away the Padmagad Fort is also an important historical landmark. The Dharampur Lake with its boating facility also makes for an enjoyable destination. The rock garden on the rocky shore of Malvan is also very picturesque. The Kolamb beach with all its solitude and beauty also makes for a marvelous and quite visit. The Karli backwaters at the Karli creek are also one of nature's many wonders which make for a beautiful visit. Tourists must visit Deobagh (God's garden) which is a beautiful overgrown village and the local fishermen offer boat rides from where dolphins can be sighted. THE CHEERFUL LAND OF INDIA Chandigarh, a union territory of India, is perhaps, the only state which serves as a capital of two states, Haryana and Punjab. The name translates as the ‘ Fort of Chandi'. Chandi is a goddess of the Hindus. It is the first planned city of India and is known internationally for its architecture and urban design. The city has projects designed by architects such as Le Corbusier, and Albert Mayer. The city tops the list of Indian State Territories with the highest per capita income in the country. Located in the fringes of the Shivalik range at 30° 44' 14 N latitude and 76° 47' 14 E longitude. The area falls under the Indo-Gangetic Plain a few miles south of the Shiwalik Hills and between two seasonal hill torrents, the Sukhna Choe and the Patiali Rao. The land is a flat, fertile tract of alluvial soils.the temperature is balanced in nature. Chandigarh city boosts of several beautiful gardens which are a treat to the eye. THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF INDIA Haryana has been a part of the Kuru region in North India. It was founded in the year 1966, when Punjab was divided into modern Punjab and Haryana. It has Delhi on all the three laterals. Chandigarh, which is administered as the union territory is the capital for Punjab as well. It is believed that this is the place that Hinduism came into existence as the epic battle of Kurukshetra and the battle of Panipat was fought here. It is located between 27° 37' to 30°35' N latitude and between 74°28' and 77°36' E longitude. The physical area is spread over 44,000 square kilometers. This state has contributed immensely towards the Green Revolution which has helped our countries in many ways. Kurukshetra is called as the Land of Holy Legends, as it is mentioned that the great battle Mahabharata took place here only. The Sri Krishna Museum in Kurukshetra features remarkable stone carvings of the poses of Lord Krishna and other deities. There are miniatures, palm leaf etchings and other forms of art that one gets to see here. The capital city was the first to introduce town planning and it is a fun loving place for tourists. Sultanpur national Park and Bird Sanctuary is an excellent place for avid bird watchers. Panchakula is the only hill station, where blackbuck, tigers, panthers and all are seen. The badhkal lake and Dumdama Lake is a must view lake spot. Along with it are a number of gardens where the nature's beauty is evident. Haryana is noted for its adventure tourism. THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN Arunachal Pradesh is a state which is located in the northeast part of our country. It shares many national and international boundaries. The majority of the population is claimed by the people of Republic of China as a part of South Tibet. Arunachal Pradesh means a land of dawn- lit mountains in Sanskrit. It is also popularly known as the land of the rising sun, because it is the easternmost state of our country. There are many immigrants who have moved into the state from various parts of India. The native's of Arunachal Pradesh are of Tibeto- Burman origin. The majority of the territory is claimed by the People's Republic of China. Itanagar is the capital of the state. Arunachal Pradesh is shielded by the Himalayas. It is covered by hill elevations ranging from 50m to 7000m, the whole cut including a number of rivers and valleys. There are five major rivers Kameng, Subansiri, Siang, Lohit and Tirap. Along with it are dense forests of oak, maple and pine altitude increases. When we talk of the history of this state, it remains a shrouded d mystery. Tourists who visit Arunachal Pradesh get a glimpse of the leafy forests and lofty mountains and awesome religious sites and the much known- flora and fauna. The capital is situated in the feet of the Himalayas, is divided into two towns; Itanagar the town and Naharlagun the valley. Here, the Ita Fort is well liked by people. The other interesting places here are the Buddhist monastery, Ganga Lake and the Buddha Vihar which has a striking yellow roof and is located amidst the greenery. Tawang Monastery is founded by a monk, Meera Lama, a contemporary of the fifth Dalai Lama. It is traced 400 years old, consisting of an expansive library, tapestries, rare hand- written scriptures and manuscripts. Tawang land is populated with local tribes, is flooded with snowcapped peaks, lakes and streams.Daporijo is a town which fascination for adventure and casting lovers. Tourisim flourishes here as it's known for its orchids, nature and hilly areas with thick greenery. Pink and white orchids are famous and there some which have medicinal value too. The historical significance of various structures situated here is another major tourist attraction. The wildlife of Arunachal Pradesh is rich and diverse. It includes tigers, elephants, jungle cats, leopards and some red pandas and white gibbons. The local people here have a fantastic taste for their songs, crafts and various cultural activities. As a tourist touring this part of India, you are sure to be entertained. “Raigad – Come Visit the Raigad Fort” Raigad is a district in the Indian State of Maharashtra, located in the Konkan region. The district was renamed as Raigad after the Raigad fort. The Raigad fort is a very famous tourist destination. The fort was built by the Maratha leader, Shivaji in the interior dense forests of the district. The fort is built atop a spur of the Western Ghats in the Sahyadri Mountain ranges. The district faces the Arabian Sea on one side and is close to Pune, Thane and Mumbai harbor. Raigad also houses the natural harbor of Pen Madwa. Raigad also includes the isle of Gharapuri or Elephanta which is known for its ancient Hindu and Buddhist caves. The Raigad fort is an imposing structure three thousand feet above sea level and is referred to as the “king of all forts” in Maharashtra. The fort was the capital of the great Maratha leader, Shivaji Chhatrapati. Walking up to the fort also makes for a great trek. For those who prefer an easy walk, they can use the Raigad Ropeway. A visit to the fort is incomplete without visiting the Raigad Museum. The museum is located at Lower Station of the fort. The fort contains the “Queen's Palace” along with other impressive structures. The Queens Palace is elegant and showcases the rich living quarters of the royal ladies. The quarter consists of six chambers; each chamber is equipped with a toilet that is fit with modern day like plumbing. The entire palace is constructed using wood. The chambers are vast, elegant and well preserved. Shivaji himself used the “Raj Bhawan” from where he administered the kingdom. The palace rests on a dual podium and has wooden columns to carry the structure. Tourists can also visit other sites in Raigad. The Gangasagar Lake is an artificial manmade lake adjacent to the fort. Legend has it that the water in the Lake is from the Holy Ganges. Shivaji was a practicing Hindu and built the famed Jagadishwar temple in his palace. The temple is a combination of Hindu and Mughal architecture. The ruins of the Jijamata Palace belonging to Shivaji's mother can also be visited. Trekkers love visiting the “Takmok Tok” which is a rock face of over twelve hundred feet. It provides amazing views of the surrounding Sahyadri Mountains. It is believed that Shivaji used the point to punish traitors by throwing them off this very cliff. A small town on the bank of the Savitri River, Mahad is often visited for the holy shrine of Shri Varad Vinayak. The incredible sight here is the eternal lamp which is said to have been burning here from 1892 AD. The temple is one of the Ashta Vinayak shrines of the State.
