Top 5 Ways To Deter A Burglar At Night

Although there are a large number of burglaries during daylight hours, a significant proportion occur at night. The ‘cover of darkness’ is perfect for a burglar who wants to gain entry without being seen, and is the best way of moving around undetected. Homes which are empty are particularly vulnerable to this kind of break-in particularly those without a burglar alarm. It is very distressing to return home from a holiday or business trip to find your house has been ransacked. So what measures can you take to deter a burglar from entering your home after darkness falls?
Let There Be Light
Light is the enemy of the nighttime burglar. Houses with intruder alarm activated lighting systems are much less likely to be burgled than those without. These inexpensive devices can detect movement by means of a motion detector, which in turn triggers a switch to a floodlight. It immediately alerts you to the presence of an intruder. You can choose the strength of the bulb used, and also opt for a system that causes an alarm to sound. A burglar who approaches the house and finds themselves suddenly under the spotlight won’t ...
... hang around. It is more likely that they will see the lights and just move on without even trying to break in.
If you don’t want a motion activated lighting system, just make sure that the outside of your house is well lit. A porch light might be enough to deter a casual burglar. These can also be motion activated too, and provide you with a visual alert that someone has approached the front door.
Gravel Paths
Sound is the other enemy of intruders. Gravel paths have the advantage of alerting you to the presence of a burglar. If you have an isolated path along the side of your house, consider a gravel surface. It is a cheap, simple measure which is impossible to evade. At night, when any unusual noises stand out, it provides a great early warning system.
Alarm Systems
A traditional burglar alarm will deter a burglar very effectively, during both night and day. Some burglar alarms automatically alert the local police if they are tripped, meaning you could have security at your door within minutes. Burglars are not unaware of this possibility, so a visible alarm system will put them off. Don’t be tempted to install a ‘dummy’ alarm, in the hope of fooling a burglar, however. They are well aware of what these devices look like.
Secure Doors and Windows
Door and window alarms go off if anyone tries to interfere with them, and are highly effective. Make sure you shut and lock windows and doors at night – an open window is an open invitation to an intruder. Some homes are actually targeted on the basis of whether a house owner regularly leaves their windows open. Practiced burglars can get through the smallest gaps, and would find entering via an open window an easy task; moreover, it enables them to enter a house totally soundlessly. However hot the weather, always lock downstairs windows and doors at night.
Timer Switches
Put your house lighting on a timer. This way your property will never look unoccupied, and you will deter burglars looking for an empty property. Timer switches are inexpensive and one of the simplest things you can do to protect your home. Make sure you time the lights to come on at regular hours if you are going to be away from home for any length of time. Weekends and holiday periods are when your home is at its most vulnerable after dark. Burglars will cruise an area over several days, looking for homes that are empty. Use a timer plug, on your TV or radio too, as an extra deterrent. Anything that suggests you are at home will help.
