Store Review Data Scraping: India Retail Reputation Index 2026
India Retail Brand Reputation Index 2026: Google Maps Ratings by City from Store Review Data Scraping
Executive Summary
India’s organised retail sector is expanding rapidly, and shoppers increasingly rely on Google Maps ratings and reviews before visiting stores. Ratings, review volumes, customer sentiment, and owner responses influence local reputation and purchasing decisions.
This report uses Store Review Data Scraping to develop an illustrative India Retail Brand Reputation Index across eight retail sectors and ten cities, using a sample of 12,000 stores and 1.8 million public reviews.
Key Findings:
The national median store rating is 4.1 stars, with a 0.6-star gap between the highest- and lowest-rated sectors.
Pharmacies and beauty stores rank highest, while electronics service centres and large-format grocery stores rank lowest.
Tier-2 cities record slightly higher ratings than metros, with fewer crowding complaints.
Billing queues and staff behaviour are the leading complaint themes.
Only 23% of negative reviews receive owner responses, while responsive ...
... stores demonstrate faster rating recovery.
Why Store Reviews Matter
Unlike periodic brand surveys, Google Maps reviews provide continuous customer feedback. Aggregated review intelligence helps retailers identify underperforming stores, track customer concerns, benchmark competitors, and evaluate response effectiveness.
Methodology
Coverage: Eight retail sectors across Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Lucknow.
Data Collection: Store review data scraping captured:
Overall ratings, total reviews, and star distributions.
Reviews from the previous 12 months, including ratings, text, dates, languages, and owner responses.
Customer feedback without collecting reviewer identities.
AI Theme Classification: Reviews were classified into billing speed, staff behaviour, product availability, pricing, cleanliness, ambience, returns and exchanges, parking, service turnaround, and food quality.
The Reputation Index combines four components, each scaled from 0 to 100, to compare reputation across sectors and cities.
Key Findings
1. Sector Rankings
Service centres score lowest, with complaints primarily involving service turnaround times and communication. Low response rates further weaken customer confidence.
2. City Rankings
Metros generate more reviews per store but receive slightly lower ratings, largely due to crowding and billing queues. Tier-2 cities perform better on ratings but face more parking and product availability complaints.
3. National Complaint Themes
Billing delays and staff behaviour dominate customer feedback, highlighting opportunities for better staffing, training, and store operations.
4. Review Responses Improve Reputation
Stores responding to most negative reviews demonstrate stronger rating momentum in the sample. Responses communicate accountability and may encourage customers to update their feedback, although operational problems still require resolution.
5. Review Language
Approximately 82% of reviews are in English, 11% in Hindi, and 7% in other Indian languages. Regional-language reviews are more common in Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. Multilingual analysis helps brands capture feedback that English-only monitoring misses.
6. Store-Level Rating Gaps
Within the same brand, rating differences between stores in one city often exceed one star. A brand averaging 4.1 stars may still have 15% of its stores below 3.7, weakening its local reputation.
7. Seasonal Patterns
Review volumes and queue-related complaints rise during festive periods. Preparing additional billing capacity and staff before peak seasons can help retailers maintain service quality.

What Retail Brands Should Do
Identify high-risk stores: Combine low ratings, negative review trends, and response rates into a store risk score.
Address recurring complaints: Prioritise staffing, billing speed, and employee training.
Respond promptly: Target replies to negative reviews within 48 hours.
Analyse multiple languages: Include Hindi and regional-language feedback.
Benchmark locally: Compare stores with competitors in the same mall or within a 2 km radius.
Mall operators, investors, franchise owners, and consultants can also use reputation intelligence to evaluate tenant performance, operational quality, and improvement opportunities.
