Every time you sign up for an app, shop online, or fill in a form, you share personal details such as your name, phone number, or email address. In India, a law now decides how businesses must handle that information. It is called the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023. Following its rules is known as DPDP compliance.
This guide explains the basics in plain words, so you can understand what the law means and why it matters.
What Does DPDP Stand For?
DPDP stands for Digital Personal Data Protection. The Act protects the personal data of people in India. It also explains what companies, apps, and organisations must do when they collect and use that data.
The government released the detailed DPDP Rules in November 2025. They are being rolled out in phases, and the main obligations are expected to apply from around May 2027.
What Is DPDP Compliance?
DPDP compliance means following the rules of the DPDP Act when you handle people’s personal data. In simple terms, it means being honest, careful, and responsible with that data.
If your business collects customer details, employee ...
... records, or website visitor information, these rules probably apply to you.
Who Needs to Follow the DPDP Act?
The Act applies to any organisation that handles digital personal data of people in India. That includes startups, banks, online stores, hospitals, schools, and large companies. It can also apply to businesses outside India if they offer goods or services to people in India.
Key Terms Made Simple
Data Principal: the person whose data is collected. This is you, the customer or user.
Data Fiduciary: the business or organisation that decides why and how the data is used.
Data Processor: a company that handles data on behalf of the Data Fiduciary, such as a cloud or payroll provider.
Data Protection Board of India: the body that looks into complaints and can impose penalties.
What Must Businesses Do?
Here are the main duties in everyday language:
Ask for clear consent. People must agree freely and knowingly before their data is used. Consent should be easy to give and easy to withdraw.
Give a simple notice. Tell people what data you collect and why, in plain language.
Use data only for the stated purpose. Do not collect more than you need, and do not use it for something unrelated.
Keep data safe. Use sensible security measures to prevent leaks and misuse.
Report data breaches. If personal data is exposed, the Data Protection Board and the affected people must be informed.
Respect people’s rights. Individuals can ask to see their data, correct it, or have it erased. They can also nominate someone to act for them and raise complaints.
Protect children’s data. Verifiable consent from a parent or guardian is needed for anyone under 18.
Delete data when it is no longer needed. Do not keep personal data forever without a reason.
What Happens If You Do Not Comply?
The penalties can be heavy. Fines can go up to ₹250 crore for serious failures, such as not protecting data properly. Beyond fines, a data breach can damage customer trust, which is often harder to rebuild than money is to earn back.
Simple Steps to Get Started
If you are new to this, you do not need to do everything at once. Start with these steps:
Find out what data you hold. List the personal data you collect and where it is stored.
Review your consent forms and privacy notices. Make sure they are clear and easy to understand.
Set up a way for people to use their rights. For example, a simple form or email for requests and complaints.
Prepare a breach response plan. Decide who will act, and how, if something goes wrong.
Train your team. Compliance works best when everyone understands the basics.
Check your vendors. Make sure partners who handle your data also follow good practices.
Can Technology Help?
Yes. Tracking consents, answering data requests, and keeping records by hand can quickly become hard as a business grows. Many organisations use a DPDP Compliance Platform to manage consents, data requests, and records in one place, which saves time and reduces mistakes.
Final Thoughts
DPDP compliance may sound complicated, but the idea is simple: treat people’s personal data with respect. Businesses that start early will find it easier to meet the deadlines and will earn more trust from their customers. If you are just beginning, focus on understanding your data, being open with your users, and building good habits step by step.
