Telescopic cranes are another form of heavy machinery cranes which are often used to transport or maneuver heavy objects from one place to another. Cranes are typically equipped with a hoist, sheaves, and either wire ropes or chains. Functionally they move items horizontally and lift them up and down. A telescopic Crane is an excellent example of how simple machines can be utilized to create a mechanical advantage for heavy commercial industries.

What is a Telescopic Crane?

A telescopic crane has a boom which consists of a number of tubes fitted inside of each other. Using either hydraulics or another power mechanism it is extended and retracted to increase or decrease the total length of the boom. Most telescopic cranes are mobile, typically truck mounted, however not all of them are. It is designed to leverage a telescopic mast on top so that it functions as a tower crane when needed.

What is a Telescopic Crane Used For?

A telescopic crane is used in day-to-day hauling operations but are most often used for maneuvering operations. An excellent example of when a telescopic crane can be used is found ...
... in the shipping industry. They are frequently used in ports because of the ease of mobility and height adjusting feasibility they offer. This level of flexibility ensures fast, exceptional service and makes them incredibly important pieces of equipment.

Benefits of a Telescopic Crane

There are a variety of unique benefits a telescopic crane can offer due to their unique makeup and design. One benefit is the ability to easily adjust the length of the boom to match working conditions. This makes the telescopic crane ideal for material handling and other jobs which require coordinated movement with other workers across a variety of terrain.

While extremely flexible the telescopic crane is also designed with ample strength to accommodate basic operations. They can also be combined with attachments such as a vibrant hammer or auger for added flexibility. Since they are typically mobile, the telescopic crane is lightweight. At the same time, the construction is both high-strength and highly rigid to ensure consistent, quality results. They can quickly be attached and supported by crawlers to deliver both solid traction and 360° stability.

As with all heavy machinery, an area of significant improvement over the past two decades is the built-in safety features found on quality telescopic cranes. One example is the operational range limiter which set specific parameters of boom angle, boom top height, and operating radius to ensure the operator does not push the device too far and create a potentially hazardous situation. Another great example of safety devices is accidental free fall prevention. To activate a freefall on a telescopic crane several separate steps must be taken. This eliminates the risk of accidentally dropping heavy loads onto individuals or objects below the crane.
