With The Modern Technology Indoor Farming Is Getting Popular
Technology has been developed for years and is growing still be it in the field of agriculture or transport or science. Year old practice of cultivating plants in your garden or in tubs over the roof is now getting a diversion with the advent of hydroponic technology inside a closed chamber.
What is Hydroponics?
It is a combination of two Greek words where ‘hydro’ meaning ‘water’ and ‘ponos’ meaning ‘labor’. So the word means working water. So the system involves the growing of plants in coir, rock, and stone etc.without soil. Earlier Mexican and Egyptian civilization were using this technique. But nowadays this technique is spreading in many areas. There are six types of this system used –
Aeroponic
Drip
Ebb and Flow
N.F.T. or Nutrient Film Technique
Water Culture
Wick
Floating garden of China and Hanging garden of Babylon are the two primitive examples of this system which was started as early as 1950. In this ...
... system the growth of plants are very rapid as the roots get the extra oxygen which helps to absorb the nutrients faster. The nutrients are supplied directly to the root system by dissolving them with water. The energy required by the plant to break the nutrient is thus less compared to the soil gardening and this energy is used by the plant to grow faster. Thus the rate of growth in this system is 30-50 percent more than normal soil plantation. The fungal diseases or bug infestations are also less compared to other farming systems. Thus less or negligible amount of pesticides are used in this system. So the plants grown are healthy and hygienic. As moisture is mainly used in this system so use of water for the growth of plants required is less. The normal plantation causes erosion of top-soil which can be replaced by using this system. To aerate and give support to the root system a medium is used. This medium used varies from different types of techniques used among the six types of hydroponics technique. Hydro corn, grow rocks and rock wools are used as medium of which rock wools are used extensively. The nutrient used is such that the plant is getting all the elements which it requires to grow and bloom. The nutrient is generally obtained in two forms e.g. in liquid form and in powdered form, the former being more easy to use as it dissolves with water quickly than the powdered form.
Some basic parts are required to build for this system:
Growing chamber or tray which acts as the protector for root from heat, light and pest’s and is the chamber for the root system.
Reservoir is the part of the system where the nutrient for the plant is stored.
Submersible pump is the part which pumps the nutrient mixed with water from the reservoir to the tray.
Simple timers are needed to control the lighting system and the submersible pump.
Air pump is an optional part but it supplies air and oxygen to the roots.
Grow lights are also an optional part.
The Stealth grow box uses the Hydroponic system in indoor farming.
