Such an interesting topic. Hypnosis has been around for a very long time, yet it appears that we are only just beginning to understand it's ability. What follows is a brief overview of hypnosis down the years, and you may find yourself quite intrigued by some of its uses.
It was in the year 1841 that James Braid invented the term Hypnosis, before that it was known as Mesmerism. Braid decided to update the name for good reason as he now had a new understanding of what was happening when someone used hypnosis. Students of Mesmerism had believed that it was down to some unique knowledge or power they held, that people entered the trance like state. Dr Braid discovered that the Hypnotist didn't hold any special power, but rather the mesmerism happened through that which was happening within the subject's thoughts.
Emile Coue was inspired to publish a book on auto-suggestion. His approach was a product of Braids findings before him. The face of hypnosis was changing as people now started to explore hypnosis as a self induced state, rather than a state under the power of the hypnotist.
Sigmond Freud who was renowned ...
... for his findings in psychology, initially had little belief in the plausibility of hypnotherapy at the start of his career. This set back the popularity of hypnosis back at the time. He massively changed his views about hypnosis as time went on, unfortunately his negative comments on hypnosis stuck in the thoughts of psychologists who were influenced by him. It was because of the entertainers interested in hypnosis, that it was kept alive at this time.
In the 1950's Psychologist Milton Erickson created a new style of hypnosis. People called his method indirect hypnosis, it was very different to the methods used previously. Doctor Milton Erickson became renowned for the techniques he used with people who rejected hypnosis with other hypnotists.
What was seen as a revolution in hypnotherapy was being shown to dentists and doctors during the same time by Dave Elman. This style was cutting edge, and used pain control and hypno-analysis. His rapid hypnotic methods are currently employed by doctors who practise hypnosis today.
A hypnotist who enriched the lives of many people was Ormond McGill, who died in 2005. Known as 'The Dean of American Hypnosis', he wrote a series of excellent manuals about stage hypnosis. Perhaps most famous for his stage hypnosis work, however he was also amazing as a hypnotherapist as well.
Gil Boyne died in 2010, creator of Transforming Therapy, which builds on the previous findings of Dave Elman and Milton Erickson, and forms the roots of a lot of analytical therapy all around the world. A great admirer of Elman and Dr Erickson, Boyne shaped a modern method of therapy. A lot of people would say that Gil was the godfather of analytical hypnotheraputic techniques.
Today hypnotists have more resources at the touch of a button than could be learned in a lifetime. Information sharing across the worldwide web is resulting in astounding developments around areas including helping cancer, asthma, allergies and certain other hard to treat conditions. Also it has come a long way in stopping habits along the lines of weight control and giving up smoking and with fears and phobias.
