Privacy And Smart Appliances: Is The Line Shrinking Between Them?

The future of the world of smart appliances and their connectivity capabilities via RFID chips present a frightening horizon for consumers and the shrinking of their rights to privacy. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC), consumers will soon be bugging their very own homes, and this mass monitoring via RFID chips, will give the government as well as lurking hackers an open door to eavesdropping on our every day lives and activities.
In an interview CBC conducted with Kevin Haley, director of Symantec Security, he said: “…One of the concerns is that hackers logging into smart appliances may be able to get information about who is home at a given time of day. This is bound to give cyber criminals new and nefarious ideas about how and when to rob someone’s home.”
Knowing how much electricity you use or how effective is the rinse cycle on your washing machine are data bits that can prove helpful to the average homeowner, but according to La Dee Homm, business strategy analyst expert with Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company, leaked information can unfortunately also concern who you really are, ...
... your demographics and your credit scores.
The worst aspect of combining the Internet of Things with smart meter data is the fact that there are no laws curtailing this new technology, which means that this information can be and often is sold to the highest bidder. One disturbing case in point which occurred in late 2013, concerned a virus that was proven to have originated from a ‘smart’ refrigerator, but not until after it wreaked havoc on many email programs.
Perhaps the most ironic feature of this situation concerns the fact that consumers are making things easy for hackers because they are willingly bugging their own residences! Web-connected devices are a double-edged sword, as the convenience they offer versus the ease of interception of data create an uncertain balance between fundamental human liberties and the right to information. Ultimately, by moving to smart homes with smart appliances and the Internet of Things, which will connect every little device imaginable to the web, the ultimate question may well become: Will that be considered the same thing as choosing to waive your rights?
