Hyundai debuted the all-new 2027 Hyundai Tucson in New York, against a Manhattan skyline that has watched plenty of crossovers arrive and stayed unimpressed. The compact SUV grows in every direction, adds a Next-generation Hybrid System, and swaps its old infotainment for the Android-based Pleos Connect. Korea receives it later this year, and North America and Europe follow in 2027. Hyundai has not announced US pricing, so this guide sticks to measured specs and rival data.

2027 Hyundai Tucson Size and Design

Hyundai calls its styling Art of Steel, which sounds like a gallery show but describes muscular fenders over restrained door panels. Specifically, the long-wheelbase body, which serves North America, grows in every key measurement. The 40 mm width gain is the largest in the segment, according to Hyundai.

Length: 4,700 mm (185.0 in), up 60 mm

Width: 1,905 mm (75.0 in), up 40 mm

...
...
Height: 1,685 mm (66.3 in), up 20 mm

Wheelbase: 2,785 mm (109.6 in), up 30 mm

Ground clearance: 180 mm (7.1 in) on standard models, 210 mm (8.3 in) on the XRT PRO, a 30 mm gain

Cargo volume (SAE): 1,067 L (41.7 cu ft)

The door opening angle widens from 73 to 83 degrees. That gift goes to anyone who has ever apologized to a concrete pillar in a parking garage. In addition, H-Edge lighting pairs indirect center lighting with edge lighting, which makes the nose look wider and lower. Micro Pixel Lighting packs 25,600 LED pixels into the headlamps for precision beam patterns, but Hyundai keeps it out of North America.

Interior Space and Controls

The cabin splits the instrument panel into two layers. A horizontal upper layer keeps the sightline clear, and a deep open tray below swallows phones, wallets and the receipts nobody files. Physical buttons return for HVAC and audio, which cuts screen-tapping and lowers driver workload. A steering-column Shift-By-Wire stalk replaces the console shifter and frees room for dual wireless pads.

Headroom: 1,036 mm (40.8 in) front, 1,031 mm (40.6 in) rear

Legroom: 1,052 mm (41.4 in) front, 1,064 mm (41.9 in) rear

Shoulder room: 1,470 mm (57.9 in) front, 1,428 mm (56.2 in) rear

Charging: dual 15 W Qi 2.0 pads plus 100 W USB-C ports in the seat backs

Seating: five occupants, with 6:4 split-folding rear seats in North America and Korea

Tucson Hybrid Powertrain and MPG

The 2027 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid pairs a 1.6-liter turbo engine with two electric motors (13 kW and 47.7 kW) and a 1.49 kWh battery. Hyundai quotes 233 hp in the US and a 0-60 mph time of 8.5 seconds. Gas and plug-in versions round out the lineup.

Gas (1.6T-GDI): 184 hp in the US, 195.3 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 mph in 9.5 to 12.4 seconds, and 28 mpg with 2WD or 26 mpg with 4WD.

Hybrid: 233 hp in the US, 279.9 lb-ft of torque, a 1.49 kWh battery, 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds, a 42 mpg target with 2WD or 38 mpg with 4WD, and 3,000 lb of towing in the US with AWD.

Plug-in hybrid: 292 ps, 279.9 lb-ft (38.7 kgf·m) of torque, a 17.1 kWh battery, 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds with AWD, 50 mi of electric range, and 1,910 kg of towing in Europe.

Why does the hybrid corner better than its mass suggests? The E-Traction system optimizes drive torque mid-turn to reduce wheel slip, which raises inner-tire grip and steadies the SUV near its limit. HEV Stay Mode runs air conditioning, heating, audio and charging with the engine off, so a school pickup line costs no fuel and no patience. Every powertrain also uses an integrated electric water pump that consolidates separate cooling circuits, cutting weight and thermal losses.

The plug-in hybrid adds a 7.2 kW onboard charger and about 81 km (50 mi) of electric range, but Hyundai sells it only in select markets. Europe-spec emissions drop from 142 g/km (gas) to 119 g/km (hybrid) and 91 g/km (plug-in).

Pro-Tip: Hyundai attaches the 42 mpg target to the 2WD hybrid on 17-inch wheels. Pick that setup for peak efficiency, and expect 38 to 40 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Pleos Connect and Gleo AI

Pleos Connect runs on Android Automotive OS. It pairs a 12.9-inch or 17-inch main touchscreen with a 9.9-inch slim display above the steering column. Gleo AI acts as an agentic assistant that parses natural speech, so a driver can ask for a hiking trailhead with parking within 30 minutes and skip the menu scavenger hunt. Third-party apps run natively, so phone mirroring becomes optional, and over-the-air updates deliver new features after purchase. Availability varies by market and trim.

Safety Technology and Structure

Hot-stamped steel and reinforced 2.0 mm center pillars manage crash loads. Hyundai also lengthens the front overhang by 20 mm for pedestrian protection. The driver aids focus on the human behind the wheel, who remains the least predictable component.

In-Cabin Monitoring Unit: tracks driver eye activity and drowsiness

Child Presence Detection and Rear Occupant Alert: warn drivers about children or pets left behind

Intelligent Speed Limit Assist: reads signs and adjusts the set speed

Navigation-Linked Smart Cruise Control: slows for curves, roundabouts and speed bumps

Hyundai targets NHTSA 5-star, IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and Euro NCAP 5-star ratings. No agency has confirmed any of them yet.

Tucson XRT PRO Off-Road Features

The Tucson XRT PRO ships with all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, front recovery hooks and 210 mm (8.3 in) of ground clearance. Smart Terrain Assist, a North America-only XRT PRO feature, rates traction and slip in real time and displays a green, orange or red “stuck score.” Consequently, the driver learns about trouble before the wheels start digging. Target Speed Control then holds a chosen speed between 2 and 25 km/h (1 to 16 mph) by managing throttle and brakes, so the driver only steers. The available Ground View Monitor shows terrain ahead of and beneath the vehicle, which spares passengers from hopping out to inspect a rock.

Tucson Hybrid vs. RAV4, CR-V and Sportage

Looking at the data, the Tucson Hybrid faces three entrenched rivals. The figures below reflect 2026 model-year ratings for the competitors.

2027 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid: 233 hp, a 42 mpg combined target, 3,000 lb of towing, 41.7 cu ft of cargo with the seats up, and no announced price.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: 226 to 236 hp, 43 mpg combined, 3,500 lb of towing, about 38 cu ft of cargo, and a starting price of $31,900.

Honda CR-V Hybrid: 204 hp, 40 mpg combined, 1,000 lb of towing, about 36 cu ft of cargo, and a starting price of $35,630.

Kia Sportage Hybrid: 227 to 232 hp, 42 mpg combined, 2,000 lb of towing, about 40 cu ft of cargo, and a starting price of $30,290.

The Tucson wins on cargo against the RAV4 and CR-V, on towing against the CR-V and Sportage, and on power against the CR-V. It loses to the RAV4 by 500 lb of towing and one mpg. By comparison, it ties the Sportage on efficiency and cargo. Automakers measure cargo differently, so treat gaps under 2 cu ft as ties.

Pro-Tips and the Question Buyers Ask

Which Tucson suits a family that tows a small camper and commutes 30 miles a day? Choose the AWD hybrid. It tows 3,000 lb, a 1,000 lb gain over the previous model, and its 38 mpg target keeps the commute affordable. Pick the plug-in only if you charge nightly and your market sells it, because 81 km of electric range covers most 30-mile days.

Pro-Tip: Skip the XRT PRO unless you need the 210 mm clearance and Smart Terrain Assist. Rugged tires carry a fuel penalty: the RAV4 Woodland rates 38 mpg combined against 43 mpg for the FWD LE.

Pro-Tip: Wait for EPA ratings and pricing before ordering, because Hyundai’s 42 mpg is a target, not a promise.

Pro-Tip: Check trailer tongue weight, since the 3,000 lb figure applies to the US AWD hybrid.

Pricing, Launch Timing and Final Take

The Tucson debuted in 2004 and has sold more than 11.1 million units, with the US supplying about 20 percent. Hybrids made up 31 percent of US Tucson sales in 2025, so Hyundai builds this generation around the buyers who already show up. A sport-inspired variant arrives at the Paris Motor Show on October 12. From an expert perspective, the 2027 Tucson competes on space, towing and technology rather than raw efficiency, and the sticker price will decide whether that strategy works.
