Spring cleaning is fast approaching, whether that be just a simple cleaning of your entire house, or a complete remodel and take down of a structure, there are some things to consider. Where are you going to toss all that junk that you just removed from those nooks and crannies? Are you planning to haul all the debris and junk yourself or hire someone to come out and do it? Do you have the right bins i.e. recycling, compost, garbage etc.? These things may seem self-explanatory, however, proper removal is more important than what many may think, for example the affects that the waste has on the environment.
Did you know that much of what you may think is “junk” and would throw out actually has the potential to be reused and repurposed thereby leaving less waste to be buried under the depths of the soil. Contamination due to poor dumping habits can lead to future costs such as medical bills due to contamination and poisoning, recycling costs to ensure that everyone is making a conscious effort to sustain our environment as long as possible, the animals and nature around us that could be poisoned, or the trees that may be cut down to make more room for the growing landfills. So in the end, either make the conscious and educated decision to haul your own debris away to the appropriate places, or spend the money to find a good company whose motto is to ensure that our earth will not fall victim of such avoidable problems.

What about batteries?! Have you ever thought about what those little things can do to the earth if not disposed correctly? Americans dump tons of batteries into landfills each year by simply just tossing a few used batteries in the trash here and there. If the issue isn’t brought to the attention of everyone, American’s could be contributing to a huge environmental problem without even knowing it. Batteries account for 50% of the mercury and cadmium pollution found in our landfills. Rechargeable batteries like the one’s found in cell phones, laptops, and MP3 players, pose a major threat to our environment when dumped into landfills or are incinerated. These rechargeable batteries contain toxic heavy metals that should never be exposed outside of their coverings. To dispose of batteries, it is suggested to look up a local toxic waste dump or battery drop off and dispose of them there. Perhaps not every time you want to throw away some batteries, but keep a place marked “dispose” and place them there, then once that is full, take it to one of those locations.
Water pollution due to improper dumping
Polluted runoff is also of great concern when dealing with the disposal of potentially harmful materials. Not only does the soil take up these chemicals, but so do our lakes, streams, wetlands and even our drinking water supply. You may be thinking how that is possible when you are not actually putting these items IN to the water. What happens is that rainfall or snowmelt that moves over the debris, carries along with it, the chemicals and pollutants thus finding their way to water supplies everywhere. This ends up harming fish and other wildlife along the way, and even worse polluting the water we rely on to drink each and every day.
