Mastering A Death Knight For Level 80 Dominance

The Death Knight is one of the most interesting, exciting new additions to World of Warcraft since the game was launched, combining exciting new methods of gameplay into a slick package that can block magic, hit harder than most characters and cast a number of spells all at once. But, mastering that Death Knight is not going to be as easy as the Hunter you have in your alt stable. With dozens of attacks, a complex attack sequence, and a number of ways to use each spec, Death Knights are a complex, mind-bending anomaly for most WoW players.
Runes and the New Fighting System
The first thing to master for new Death Knights is the way in which they fight. Instead of having mana, energy, or rage, Death Knights have Runic Power and 6 Rune Stones (2 Blood, 2 Frost, and 2 Unholy) that allow them to attack. Each attack will require either one or two runes or some amount of runic power and each attack will build up runic power as you strike. You can technically chain spells together indefinitely without stopping since you have no mana if you know how to run your cooldowns.
Diseases
Along with your attacks come ...
... diseases. Each Death Knight will have either 2 or 3 diseases (one for each tree) and a Blight that comes with each one. Diseases each last 12 seconds and can be shared between mobs you are fighting to spread amongst a group. You can also use your AoE to boost your disease damage, burst the diseases for a heavy hit or use Death Strike to heal through those diseases. Disease management is the key to playing any Death Knight.
Ghouls and Gargoyles Oh My
The last thing Death Knights have up their sleeves are Ghouls. Every Death Knight can call ghouls but only Unholy Death Knights can keep them out until they die (other specs will see them fade after the casting time runs out). These adds will hit for big damage and can be used as bombs if needed. Unholy Death Knights can also call a highly powerful Gargoyle as a third add that will help you beat down high level Elites. Forget ever needing a second or third person for those group quests in Outland or Northrend.
If played properly, a Death Knight is a massive weapon that can destroy in solo combat or you can die quickly due to poor management of all those slick new toys. Learn your class well and you’ll be a powerful adversary. Don’t learn it well and you’ll be struggling around with all the other noob Death Knights in Outland for a good long time.
