Researchers have found that 3D printing is not only cheaper, but a greener way of making things.Michigan Technological University's Joshua Pearce says that a 3D printer uses less energy and therefore doesn't damage the environment.

Pearce, a professor of materials science, and his colleagues conducted a life cycle impact analyses on three products: an orange juicer, a children's building block and a waterspout.

Children’s blocks are normally made of solid wood or plastic. But 3D printed blocks can be made partially or even completely hollow, requiring much less plastic. They looked at total amount of energy spent on manufacturing these products, right from the extraction of raw materials to making the final product for both 3D printed materials and those made by the conventional methods.

People might feel that producing something on a large scale is cheaper. But Pearce argues that when it comes to 3D printing, making products at home is a lot more affordable and even reduces the amount of carbon produced.

They found that making the items on a basic 3D printer required 41% to 64% less energy than ...
... producing them in a factory. The team also looked at common types of plastic filament used in 3D printing such as PLA which is made up of Corn starch.PLA is a better greener way of alternative to petroleum-based plastics.

At a recent news release Pearce said that” we can get substantial reductions in energy and CO2 emissions from making things at home and the home manufacturer would be motivated to do the right thing and use less energy, because it costs so much less to make things on a 3D printer than to buy them off the shelf or on the Internet."

Overall, the results indicate that distributed manufacturing using open-source 3D printers has the potential to have a lower environmental impact than conventional manufacturing for a variety of products.

Have you ever wished you could lift your pen off the paper and see your drawing becomes a 3D object?Well now you can! Using 3Doodler.

The pen does exactly what you would think: it allows people to draw 3D plastic objects in the air through freestyle sketching or by tracing shapes from templates. It is compact and very easy to use and requires no software or computers. You just need to plug it into a power socket and can start drawing anything within minutes.

3Doodler is the most affordable way to 3D print…It is the world’s first hand held printing device.
As 3Doodler draws, it extrudes the heated plastic, which cools quickly and transforms into solid and strong stable structure. This helps in allowing us to build infinite variety of shapes and items with ease. Just like the other 3D printers in the market, it uses 10 inch strands of both ABS and PLA plastic optimized for the 3Doodler pen. Another fifty strands of plastic in an array of colors will be sold along with the pen in order to meet 3D printing needs.

The pen can also be used by design professionals.Artists, hobbyists, 3D printing fans, and even kids can soon get in on the latest in 3D printing action.
