The government has very recently announced that they would like to see us digging out our old bikes again and taking to roads under pedal power during the recession. They have outlined three major reasons why both we and the country would benefit from such a change of habits and they go a little something like this:

1.) Better for environment. We all know that not using the car and not burning petrol will help to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to helping the planet. What the government have made apparent though is just how massive the impact of switching to cycling can have, when we take into account the other elements that go into making cars run. Carbon is released during the sourcing of raw minerals, the construction of the materials, the manufacturing of the cars and then the transporting of those cars all around the world. So you see, if you make the switch to a bike, you'll be doing a lot more good than you might have first thought.

2.) Better for health. This one really goes without saying bit it is something the government what to reiterate. This country has a massive obesity problem and ...
... it isn't being helped by the recession. People are opting for cheap, often lower quality foods in an attempt to tighten their budget and are also cancelling their gym memberships, which many believe is a luxury they can do without. Using your bike to go to work, head to the shops or even just going on a leisurely ride will vastly improve you fitness and you're heath will benefit also

3.) Cheaper. It is only when you stop using your car that you fully realise how much of a drain on your finances it really is. If you think about, you have to pay for road tax, insurance, servicing, parts and then of course, petrol. Whilst petrol prices have slowed down recently, they have been rising steadily for the last 10 years and will only go up in future. If you add up all those expenses, you realise that it makes up a large part of your monthly and yearly outgoings and again, this will only increase. If you then consider how much a bike costs to runthat's right, its nothing! No tax or compulsory insurance or fuel. You might need to eat the odd chocolate bar every now again to keep you going but there are worse sacrifices you can make right.
