When you break it down, whether the creators know it or not, most apps are designed for either ease or performance. Those designed for performance are more suitable for users that are more technologically intuitive and know more advanced features on mobile devices than most common users. On the other hand, those apps that are designed for ease make up the majority of the offerings on the market, and are more compatible with common users that only have a basic, if not subpar understanding of the device they are using. Ultimately, making a distinction between which type of user your enterprise is targeting will help you decide on which type of app to develop: one made for performance or one made for ease of use.

The Performance App

Whether you realize it or not, if your app is designed for performance, it will mostly certainly appeal to advanced technology users. In other words, someone that just bought his or her first smartphone probably will not know what to do with a performance driven app. They may try, but many of the features and overall capabilities will likely be over their head. For such reason, you should ...
... always be aware of the type of app that you are offering to the mobile market. If you have no idea whether your app is meant for ease of use, or advanced performance, then you better figure it out quick. The biggest issue with not knowing if your app is designed for performance is that you may end up target marketing the wrong segment of the market. The last thing you, or any other app maker, for that matter, wants is to market their performance based app to novice mobile device users. That is just asking for failure.

The Easy To Use App

Apps that are easy to use are much more versatile in terms of marketing to mobile device users. More specifically, while they are likely best targeted at novice app users, it certainly is not the end of the world if you offer it to advanced users. While they may get bored with such a simplified mobile offering, they are still more likely to be successful using an easy to use app than a novice user would be using a performance app. Recognizing that your mobile app is in fact an offering designed for ease of use, will help you target market more effectively. If you are having trouble figuring out which type of mobile app you are offering, look no further than its features. If they are complicated and are presented without much explanation, then you likely have a performance app on your hands. However, if you have included a tutorial on simplified features such as logging in to the app, and basic navigation, then your app is meant for ease of use.

Conclusion

While it is definitely a more organized strategy to plan which type of mobile app you wish to offer to the market before or during the design phase, it is never too late to do so. If you currently have no idea whether your app is designed for performance or ease of use — as most apps are either one or the other — then take a good look at it using the aforementioned ideas. It should become clear which type of app you are offering and whom your target market is.
