You want to be a successful landlord. You have a terrific income property and wish to have a great relationship with your tenants. This can be a common idea here.

Seems good.

But what if your tenants don’t wish to have a great relationship with you?

Most Tenants Are great, But…

There are some people out there who are able to abuse the system as well as end up costing you 1000s of dollars.

There’s an amazing story in the Ontario Landlords Organization website of a really decent landlord that thought being decent was enough. She learned it wasn’t. The content is called:

An Ontario Landlord Story - “I Guess We Were Naive”

Whether you are a Barrie landlord, Orillia landlord, Owen Sound landlord, Gray County landlord or even anywhere else, this story is a wake-up call and shows you what can happen when things fail.

1. The Beginning

At first she rented to one tenant. With regard to eight months issues were great. Then, the tenant’s boyfriend relocated in.

2. The Conflict Starts

... became angry at her because they kept having fires on the yard and she cancelled the fire enable. The landlord simply didn’t want to be responsible for fines when the tenants kept getting fires during the time of a total fire ban.

Three. The Landlord and Renter Conflict Escalates

Out of revenge, the tenants started piling up all the trash in the lawn instead of moving this to the roadside.

The landlord didn’t want to pay individuals fines either -- so when the township by-law official gave up on dealing with the tenants straight and sent the landlord a letter notifying them that the landlord could be responsible for the cost of using a crew clean it upward, the landlord served the tenant with a type N5 telling them to clean it up or risk eviction.

Makes sense doesn’t it.

The actual tenant did make an attempt at cleaning, in other words re-organizing the mountains of garbage.

Then the boyfriend came home from their job and put an huge tantrum, not only undoing all of her attempt, but also tearing bags open as well as scattering dirty diapers from one end from the yard to the other!

Four. This Is Just The Beginning

The actual worst was however to come…It really is an amazing story and a wake up for all Ontario landlords!
