One of the greatest difficulties a dentist always has is a good view of the areas of tooth he is looking at. Sure there have been "Bite wing" X-rays" for a superficial look at the tooth and its roots. These of course show up decay (if such decay is not hidden by a filling) but they really do not give a true feel of the tooth itself.

It is also impossible to give a picture to the patient of anything more than a frontal reflection of the first few teeth in their mouth. So to explain to a patient why reconstruction or re enameling is necessary or to show the progress of orthodontics, or the problems being cause by impacted number 8s.

But if one could show them a decent photograph life would suddenly become a lot simpler. Sure Cameras have been around for ages. The trouble is that a decent camera has a huge and bulky lens and needs a lot of light to make a decent image. In order to get a good picture of the back of any tooth, or the front of 5, 6 7 and 8 was virtually impossible or involved a fair amount of contortion and an image from one angle only.

And so some manufacturers started developing cameras for all sorts of applications. Fiber optics enabled keyhole surgery as a surgeons could see areas within a lesion without having to expose by opening massive cuts. These have now all morphed into digital cameras so instead of having to look at tiny images the surgeon can see a projection on a huge screen.

The lenses didn't always give a good image and they were fragile breaking or failing after a period of use, often just after the warranty had expired.
