With so many categories of mobile applications on the market, it is extremely hard to pinpoint certain features that every mobile app should have. For instance, the features on a gaming app are going to be much different than, say, a banking app, or perhaps a social media app. The spectrum of features that the various types of apps hold is as diverse as are the users themselves. For such reason, it is important to create your app with its own personality and character. With that said, however, there are generally a handful of features that pretty much every app has, which you should also consider including in your mobile offering. For your consideration, here are three features that every mobile app should have.

Customizable Settings

It goes without saying that every app should have a settings function. As you likely know, the settings function allows the user to customize the other features on your app. While settings are generally limited, they still provide a bit of personalization for users to take advantage of when using your mobile app. From the notifications they receive on their mobile device, ...
... to privacy and parental controls, the settings give users just enough control over your app to make them feel as if it is unlike any other user’s experience.

Welcome Interface

Surely, you have heard that first impressions are of the upmost importance when first meeting someone. Similarly, the first thing a user sees when opening an app is crucial to the impression it has on them. While some apps aim to quickly return users to the previous function they used last on the app, others like to give them a fresh screen to start from upon opening the app. For instance, some users hate having to wait for a welcome screen to show up. Additionally, other apps, such as games, often pick up where the user last left off. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but be sure to keep in mind that you only get one chance at a first impression, so try to create the welcome interface of your app according to how you think your users would like to be greeted. Then, design your interface around such user preferences and hope it all goes over smoothly.

Simple Navigation

The complexity of mobile apps can easily overwhelm many users, which is why simple navigation is key to their continued use of your app. Whether your users are using a smartphone or tablet device, the simpler it is to navigate around your mobile app, the more likely they will be to use it frequently and enjoy doing so. It may seem like an obvious idea to make the navigation of your app simple, but you would also be surprised at how easy it is to lose sight of such forethought when developing a complex mobile application. In fact, dealing with a confusing navigation is one of the most common things that mobile app users complain about.

Conclusion

All apps certainly are not created the same, nor do they all have the same features. With that said, most apps at least aim to focus on the three aforementioned features in order to satisfy a wide range of users. While not all succeed at doing so, seeing that your app has simple navigation, a good welcome interface and customizable settings is the best way to make sure your app is appealing to a broad audience.
