Until very recently, I'd never really understood what airport transfers were all about. I mean, I knew what they were, I just couldn't really understand anyone every using them. Required to catch two trains to reach the airport in time for my flight departure, I left for the train station early in the morning on New Year's Eve, intending to arrive at my destination in time to bring in the new year there.
Stood waiting on the platform for the first train, the false dulcet tones of the man responsible for doling out bad news to cold and hungry would-be passengers waiting good naturedly enough in the open air came seeping from the loud-hailer. My train would be delayed, and by 45 minutes.

Making a few panicked calls while riding my delayed train, I arranged to an airport transfer company to pick me up from the train station I'd be arriving at in less than an hour, and drive me to the airport. It seemed to strike me as expensive, but when I worked things out, the cost was really only marginally above what I paid for my rail ticket, and since I'd get to travel in what was essentially first class, in the warm seclusion of the back of a modern car with rear-heated seats, I felt this more than fair.
