Sim Security: Be Safe While You’re Saving Money

Whenever your mobile phone utilizes SIM international calling technology – SIM is an acronym for “subscriber identity module” – it makes and receives calls on local networks overseas, as opposed to your network back home. What that means is you can enjoy low-cost calls, since you won’t be paying international rates. But while SIM cards are simple and affordable, they do carry some risks, so follow the advice below to keep yourself safe.
First, make sure your SIM card is securely stored on your person at all times. It’s all too easy for a SIM card, or a phone with a SIM card in it, to slip from a purse or wallet. And some cities are notorious for a high number of pickpockets. If you do lose your SIM card and someone else finds it, or if someone steals it, that person will be free to make as many calls as he or she wants, at your expense, until such time as you report the missing card to your carrier. For that reason, you should keep checking for your SIM card periodically; the sooner you notice it’s missing, the sooner you can call to cancel it.
For an extra layer of protection – and for ...
... the peace of mind that comes with it – you may want your SIM card locked. A locked SIM card cannot be activated unless the caller types in a Personal Identification Number - PIN. Of course, if your SIM card requires a PIN, that means you’ll have to either memorize your PIN – which can be tricky, or near-impossible if you’re buying a new SIM card every time you go to a different country – or you’ll have to carry around with you a slip of paper with your PIN printed on it. In the latter case, it’s wise not to store your SIM card and the piece of paper with your PIN in the same place. If they’re both in your jacket pocket, for example, and someone swipes your jacket, then the thief can start making calls on your tab.
Whenever you use a SIM card, you use a temporary new phone number that your carrier assigns you. Therefore, don’t neglect to give that phone number to all your friends and family members before leaving home. If you have to call someone in an emergency, you want that person to be able to identify you as the caller. Test out your SIM card as soon as you arrive at your destination to be certain it’s in working order.
Scrutinize your mobile phone bills to be sure there aren’t any calls listed on them which you didn’t make. If there are, report those calls to your phone company at once. This could be evidence that someone has hacked into your SIM card, which is a serious situation because a hacked SIM card can lead to a case of identity theft. At the same time, take comfort that most SIM cards are safe from hackers, as they’re protected by an encryption key.
