Physicians usually pay a good deal of money for medical transcription services. According to Medical Economics, physicians spend between $15,000 and $25,000 a year for transcription services. But the EHR eliminates the need to use transcription services.

Using electronic health records software also eliminates the costs required to store paper records. There will no longer be any need to buy, copy, manage, store, or destroy paper charts. And the space needed for storage can also be converted to other uses. Some estimates put the cost of maintaining a paper chart at $3 per chart.

One study showed that a practice consisting of 12 physicians saved $5,000 a year in storage costs after it changed to an EHR. Another report estimates that a major medical center in Boston, which sees about 750.000 patients a year, will save about $6 million a year resulting from a change to EHRs.
