The term Avionics is derived from Aviation Electronics but has come to cover anything associated with electrical, instrumentation, radio, radar, autopilot, compass, inertial navigation or satellite communications.
Aircraft Avionic Engineers typically have a background that includes specific interest in Math’s and Physics normally their education will include much practical training and experience.
Historically Aircraft had very little in the way of Avionics with the additions coming both through a basic need for example lights for night flight, Navigation systems for night flight Radios for communication, also to provide a technological solution to a potential problem. For example, GPWS ground Proximity Warning System and TCAS Traffic Collision Avoidance System.
Modern aircraft owe their sophistication to state of the art electronics which deliver a safe and reliable transport system. Developed over many decades aircraft Avionic systems enable everything we have come to expect as normal in Aviation.

A great deal of training is typically involved in becoming a successful Avionic Engineer or Licences Aircraft Maintenance Engineer holding a B2 Licence to sign CRS – Certificate of Release to Service for Aircraft.
Typical Duties of an Avionics engineer will include the following:
Perform or supervise Avionic Maintenance and Repair tasks, Troubleshooting of Defects and installation of Service Bulletins and Modifications.
The Avionic Engineer has to be able to work to a schedule to enable the on time completion of tasks, ensuring the correct documentation of all tasks and where necessary diligent hand over of outstanding work.
You will have a detailed knowledge of the use of tooling and test equipment and the techniques used to repair Electrical Wiring Interconnect Systems - EWIS.
To ensure that you and all staff working with you comply with all processes and procedures and that at all times safe standard practices are followed. As a result it will be necessary to have a very detailed knowledge of EWSPM Electrical Wiring Standard Practices Manual and be very familiar with reading and understanding wiring and schematic diagrams.
The Avionics Engineer should be highly motivated and have good self discipline, also to recognize the importance of good housekeeping. You will normally be expected to work shifts and may be asked to work night shift.
During Maintenance Checks the Avionic Engineer will perform detailed inspections of installations and verify the integrity of the installed systems, any defects observed will be noted and a task card raised to perform the required actions.
