Prepaid Internet: A Lifesaver At Home And Abroad
World travelers should focus on enjoying themselves, not on how much they’re paying to get online. The trouble is, though, that in many places around the globe there might not be an Internet hotspot located near to where you’re staying. You might even be staying in a city where finding a hotspot is next to impossible. Therefore, if you need to use the Internet for any reason – and chances are you’ll want to check your email at times while you’re away – you might have to call your local Internet Service Provider, or ISP, every time you attempt to go online. And whenever you do this, you risk being charged enormous fees. But is there an affordable, effective way to avoid an eye-popping bill for Global Roaming? Indeed there is, and it’s called Prepaid Internet.
Prepaid Internet is a system whereby, whenever you try to access the Internet in another country via your cell phone, your phone automatically dials a local telephone number to get online. Therefore, you’re charged only for local calls. And under this prearranged system, you determine ahead of time how ...
... many online minutes you’ll use when traveling internationally. Of course, you could always sign up for an unlimited dial-up Internet access plan, but such a plan could cost $20 a month or more, and you might only need a certain amount of data when you’re abroad. You don’t have to worry about underestimating the number of minutes you’ll use either, because with most prepaid systems, if you find that you need more quota you can simply buy them on the spot. In fact, you might actually wish to purchase as few minutes as possible while you’re away. After all, the more you curtail your Internet usage, the more you’ll be able to soak in all the sights and sounds around you.3
At this point you might be wondering: is such a prepaid plan more efficient than renting a hotspot? It’s true that the prepaid system isn’t perfect; it requires that you keep track of your minutes online so you don’t exceed your plan and dial up Internet may be a little slower than what you’re accustomed to. It’s also true that renting a hotspot is a highly efficient means of accessing the Internet abroad. However, this latter system can be quite pricey. Unless you plan on being on the Internet A LOT while you’re away, it’s unlikely you’ll require your own hotspot.
Incidentally, the prepaid plan isn’t useful only for world travel; you can also purchase this kind of online access as a backup system for your home Internet. That is, should you at any point lose Internet access at home, you can just grab your cell phone and use its prepaid data to get online until such time as your Internet access is restored.
