The process by which any app or software designed for mobile devices is tested in order to judge its usability, functionality, or consistency, is known as mobile app testing. The mobile apps or software which are tested can either be preinstalled in the device or can be downloaded from various mobile software distribution platforms. The main reason for the growing adoption of the trend of app testing has been a drive to release only good quality mobile applications in a highly competitive mobile market. The sale of mobile devices has risen at a phenomenal rate over the past few years; this has led to the demand for mobile apps in various categories, and developers must make sure that their apps serve the desired function by conducting the process of app testing.

Mobile App Testing Categories:

Listed below are some ways to conduct mobile application testing. App designers may opt for one or more of these testing procedures before releasing their software in the mobile market:

1. Laboratory Testing – This type of testing is carried out with the help of network carriers. The wireless network is simulated ...
... and the testing procedure is conducted to search for glitches mainly in the data connection or voice connection functionalities of the mobile app.

2. Functional Testing – This is the most basic format of mobile app testing. It is conducted to ensure that all features of an application are working as per requirements set by the developer. The functional testing of a mobile app is driven by aspects such as call flows & user interface.

3. Memory Leakage Testing – When a software, application, or computer program is not able to manage the memory that it is allocated to it, it results in poor app performance and in most cases slowing down of the overall computer system. Most mobile devices show constraints of available memory space, and this is the reason why the memory leakage testing is important for ensuring proper functionality.

4. Performance Testing – This is one of the most elaborate app testing processes as the behavior or performance of the software is checked under conditions of bad network availability, low battery, low memory, and simultaneous access to the server of the app by multiple users. App performance is highly affected by the server side and the client side of a mobile application. Performance testing seeks to check both aspects of performance.

5. Usability Testing – This process is carried out for verifying if a mobile app achieves its goals and gets favorable responses from the target audience. It is true that usability of an application leads to higher commercial success in the mobile market.

6. Certification Testing – Apps need a compliance certificate before releasing in the market. Therefore each app has to pass the guidelines chalked out by different OS platforms.

7. Installation Testing – For mobile apps which are installed by the user from a distribution platform, the developer must make sure that the process of installation goes without any interference. Installation, uninstallation, and updating software come under the purview of this form of testing.

8. Interrupt Testing – This is conducted to prevent interruptions such as incoming & outgoing calls, battery removals, incoming notifications, incoming & outgoing SMS/MMS, device power cycle, cable insertion or removal, network outage or recovery, etc.

The above listed procedures of mobile app testing go a long way in ensuring the success of the application in the mobile market.
