Experienced Lawyers Help Clients Avoid Jail Time

A single criminal conviction can result in jail time.
Some of those accused -- often individuals who have failed to retain the services of a skilled Toronto criminal law firm lawyer -- spend time in jail awaiting trial.
This creates a division within jail populations where some inmates are being held for a sentence while others are remanded in custody until their trial begins.
The gulf between those accused of a crime and those convicted of one can be significant, often adding tension to an already stressful environment.
According to the most recently available data, in 2008/9, more than 370,000 adults who received custodial sentences were admitted to correctional facilities in Canada.
Close to half of these admittances involved individuals who had been accused of a crime and were awaiting a trial.
Another portion of the jail population had been admitted for temporary detention. Later, many of those admitted were discharged to community programs.
A division in the conviction rate among those who make up prison populations is likely to remain for some time as more and more ...
... people are being admitted to custody while they await trial.
Reports suggest that in 2008/2009, six in 10 admissions to custody were for those awaiting trial.
Regardless the density of a jail population, being held in custody is a difficult experience better avoided.
Significant financial resources are allocated to housing inmates, though the investment is not manifest in any sort of comfort or luxury within the jail system.
Research reveals that in 2008/9 it cost about $320 per day to house a federal inmate and about $162 per day to house an inmate in the provincial system.
Experts who work with Toronto criminal law firms can often help those accused of a crime avoid jail time. A lawyer who understands the criminal court system can help negotiate terms for a client awaiting trial that do not involve being remanded in custody.
In addition, an experienced lawyer can help minimize the likelihood that a client convicted of a crime spends much time in jail.
It is important to secure a good lawyer because fairness is a right to which anyone charged with a criminal offence in Canada is entitled in advance of a conviction.
The Canadian court system is a busy one.
Courts in Canada heard about 400,000 adult cases involving more than 1 million charges in 2010/11, while courts dedicated exclusively to hearing youth matters completed more than 52,000 cases involving more than 178,000 charges.
