Getting a Federal Firearms License can be quite exciting, but it comes with increased responsibility and accountability. Since you are the licensee and the firearm is issued in your name, ultimately you are responsible for anything that goes wrong. Instead of regretting later, it is extremely important to learn the safety measures right in the beginning. After all, you will never want to hurt yourself, your family, or anybody out there.
The following are the top 3 safety precautions that you must know before buying your first firearm. Although these points tend to be the most prominent ones; nevertheless, often get ignored by people in possession of firearms. In addition to the following safety tips, it is your duty as a Federal Firearms License holder to learn loads of other safety measures with regards to firearms handling and play your role as a responsible citizen.
Keep the Muzzle in Safe Direction
A person with common sense should know the importance of keeping the muzzle in a safe direction at any given time. You must never point it to any living being or non-living thing if you do not intend to shoot ...
... it. Keep the muzzle in such a direction that even if it goes off accidentally, it doesn’t hurt/damage/kill anyone. You yourself are the best judge to decide where to direct the muzzle under the given circumstances.
Keep the Finger Off and Outside the Trigger
Until and unless you are ready to shoot, you must keep your finger away from the trigger. Failure to follow this tip may result in an accidental discharge. While you are focusing on the target, you are supposed to rest your index finger away from the trigger. It may be a little disturbing for you to practice in the beginning, but as you develop this habit of resting the finger at the available area you will understand its importance.
Keep the Firearm Unloaded
You must keep the firearm unloaded till the time you are ready to use it. Even if you are receiving the gun from someone or handing it over to someone else, it is your responsibility to verify whether it is unloaded. Remove the magazine and take out the ammunitions. However, if you do not know how to check whether it is loaded or not, you must not TRY it. Immediately get help from the firearms expert.
The firearms precautionary rules are meant to keep the society safe from any harmful and unpleasant situations.
