Ladakh, the Land of High Passes, is an exotic region in the northernmost Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. It is marvelously sandwiched between the Great Himalayas to the south and the Karakoram mountain range to the north. The region is composed of two districts namely Leh and Kargil. Leh is also the second largest district in the country. Leh town is the main town and was the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh. Leh Palace: Leh is an old and historical town and served royal capital city of the old kingdom. It is also famous for a nine storey palace built by king Singe Namgyal in the 17th century. Its architecture reflects ancient Tibetan architectural style and is situated at the base of Leh. Government of Ladakh has declared it as a heritage site. Hemis Monastery
Hemis is the biggest and wealthiest monastery of Ladakh region. It is located at the distance of approximately 47 km from Leh, the capital town of the region. Founded in the year 1630 it is famous for its architecture. The Gompa houses an array of items such as copper gilt statue of Lord Buddha, sacred thankas, various gold & silver stupas and several other beautiful artifacts. Annual Hemis Festival and Sacred Dance Festival also attract the attention of tourists.
Likir Monastery
Likir Gompa is a magnificent Buddhist monument located at the distance of approximately 62 km from Leh town. It was founded in the year 1065. It belongs to the Yellow Hat Sect of Buddhism. Famous for stunning architecture the Gompa houses a number of holy shrines. It is presently served as the residence of about 120 Buddhist monks.
Drass, Kargil, Nubra Valley, Zanskar, etc are other interesting places to visit on Ladakh Tours. Thiksey Gompa: Thiksey Monastery is one of the most popular Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. It is located at the distance of 19 km from Leh. The structure of this magnificent gompa appears like the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Thiksey Gompa complex has 12 floors and houses many items of Buddhist art such as Stupas, wall paintings, swords, statues and thangkas. The gompa is said to as the largest gompa in central Ladakh. Maitreya (future Buddha) Temple is one of the main points of interest here.
Shey Gompa: Shey Gompa is a monastery located at the distance of 15 km from Leh. Shey is also famous for Shey Palace Complex and beautiful valleys. The gompa is famous for 12 meter Shakyamuni Buddha statue. It is said to be the second largest such statue in the entire region of Ladakh.
