Symptoms Of Reflux Esophagitis In Children And Adults
Reflux esophagitis is a disease of the gastrointestinal tract. The cause of the disease is the infiltration of gastric acid into the esophagus. As the mucosa of the esophagus does not have powerful protection against the effects of acid masses, there is an infringement of its integrity and, consequently, inflammation. The disease has similar symptoms to other diseases of the stomach, pancreas and esophagus. The main symptom of reflux esophagitis is heartburn. Unlike similar diseases of the stomach there may appear sudden heartburn regardless of the meal. Heartburn may occur during the day, may awaken from sleep at night. Heartburn usually gets worse after eating, provokes increased acidity of the stomach and leads to penetration of the gastric juice in the wall of the esophagus. Heartburn and regurgitation hiccups, mostly acidic, are also symptoms of reflux esophagitis.
Vague chest pain is the feature which distinguishes reflux esophagitis from other similar illnesses. Sometimes the pain is felt in the neck, jaw and left shoulder. The disease can become one of the causes of pain under right shoulder blade, or ...
... pain under left shoulder blade.
These symptoms of reflux esophagitis are not specific, but are met in many patients. They complain of burning sensations in the retrosternal area, which occurs after a meal, a sudden change in body position, with slopes or other physical activity.
Symptoms of reflux esophagitis in children
Reflux esophagitis symptoms are met more frequently in children than in adults. These include bur burning and pain in the stomach. Typically, children suffer from sour belching. Some kids experience sour belching vomiting. They may feel burning sensation in the chest during sleep. These symptoms of reflux esophagitis are always worse during sleep when the baby is in a horizontal position and after a meal. Since reflux is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the esophagus, one of the symptoms of this disease is pain in the solar plexus. This symptom may signal of a major cause of reflux - hiatal hernia.
More severe conditions of the disease are characterized by a feeling of slow passage of food down the esophagus. In such cases, there is the process of cicatricial narrowing of the esophagus. If drug treatment does not lead to improvement of the patient, doctors recommend surgery.
