Tablet Demand To Explode Over Coming Years

Apple may already be the undisputed heavyweight of the Tablet PC world with its all-powerful iPad, but new research has suggested that the tablet’s glory days are far from over.

In fact, those of the tablet PC market as a whole may not yet have even begun.


According to the results of a new study carried out by IDC, total global tablet PC sales are to be considerably higher than expected this year and have subsequently increased their own estimates to 107.4 million units from the previous 106.1 million. However, such numbers represent a mere drop in the ocean as according to the same study, global tablet shipments for next year will hit incredible highs of at least 142 million, while by 2016 upwards of 222 million tablets will be shipped worldwide.


What’s more, the above estimates have only accounted for Windows 8 Tablets rather cautiously, therefore should the imminent arrival of countless Windows Tabs lead to the phenomenal success story Microsoft has promised, the numbers could skyrocket even further.

However, while the vast majority of leading tablet developers are likely to an increase in interest over the coming years – at least in basic sales figures – IDC believes that it is Apple and its iPad range that will continue to grow in market share, at the expense of all others. In 2011, the iPad swallowed up around 58% of the overall tablet PC market, which is expected to grow to over 62% by the end of this year. Android on the other hand is expected to see a modest slide from 38.7% to 26.5%, though actual device sales will most likely be considerably up.

According to IDC, Apple’s ongoing success with the iPad range is nothing to do with chance or even the development of consumer habits, but rather an incredible knack for hitting the nail right on the head in terms of both upgrades and pricing points.
