I recently moved from Canada to New York. I got my first job in New York and I had no other choice other than to leave my dear friends as I had to build my career. I was happy moving to New York as it is a land full of opportunities, but I sorely missed my friends. I was trying to get accustomed to the surroundings and remain occupied with the hectic life, but nothing could fade the pain of my loneliness.

I used to chat with my friends over the Internet for hours. But I used to lose contact as I couldn’t carry my computer with me every time. So I searched for the best telephone service provider in my locality and finally ended up with the Centurylink phone service. They gave me unlimited local and nationwide service calling along the top calling features like Caller ID, call Waiting and Voicemail. So I had no need to worry about the bill and I could have long, lovely conversations with my friends in Canada.

After a few days of continuously speaking over the phone, I felt as if I had run out of words. Sometimes we get the queer feeling that we cannot express ourselves while we talk. Letters are the best ...
... way to convey deep emotions. But where do we find time amongst your busy schedule to sit down and write long letters?
I had a better idea- SMS (Short Message Service). Yes, we could text each other and save time instead of having to write letters to express our feelings.

Everybody who has a phone would surely have messaged at least once. SMS also known as text messaging is a network feature that allows you to send and receive short text and numeric messages. The SMS is one of the most widely used data applications in the world and it can be either send from one person to another or can be sent to a mass audience in a particular geographical location. The SMS came to existence around 1985 and it started to gain popularity only towards the 21st century.

Sending a SMS is more convenient and economical when compared to Voice calls or voice mail. You can receive a message even while you are making a call and they are directly delivered to your phone. Now as the SMS have jumped into the bandwagon, new short hands are emerging to facilitate communication. People don’t find time to type long messages and so shorthand is gaining familiarity. For instance, “I wnt 2 c u” could mean “I want to see you”. The shorthand is used for convenience and it saves a lot of time. Moreover as a SMS is limited to 150- 180 words the need to send a two or more messages to convey a single idea arises. But with shorthand you can send a long message in consisted form and fit into the 180 word format.

SMS is gaining acceptance all over the world and so many TV shows have started using SMS service for various communication. The famous show “American Idol” is a good example. They allow the viewers to vote for their favorite contestant through a SMS voting system. Even Google has incorporated the SMS facility by which you can retrieve the weather report or the sports news by texting a specific number or code. So, using SMS you can have access to wide information on the Internet.

Now you have the Emoticons to convey your emotions while you SMS. Don’t you know what emoticons are? Here are few examples (, :o), :], :c), :>, :o), :c), >:o >:O :-O). You can easily let the other person know when you are angry, sad or happy.

The mobile phones are also developed in such a way to aid messaging. Nowadays the mobile phones have the QWERTY keypad in them to speed up your typing. I can type messages on my phone at ease without looking at the keypad. My fingers automatically press the alphabets when I think of typing a word without the help of my eyes. It is the case with many people who have experience in sending SMs for a long time.
