The transport industry is a huge one that includes the shipping industry, the airplane industry as well as the on road transporting vehicles industry. Even with so many ways of transporting system available, the demand for faster transport is ever growing, especially for businesses that require immediate transport of raw materials or completed materials. To aid to this growing demand, new inventions are being made every day too. One such invention that has taken the shipping transport industry by storm since its inception is the E ship 1. It is owned by one of the biggest wind turbine manufacturing companies of the world, Enercon GmbH, a German company.

The E ship 1 is the first ship to use Flettner rotors and hence is also known as a Flettner ship. It was launched in the year 2008 on August 2 and started its voyage in the year 2010 in August after getting tested and tried through three trial runs in the month of July. A renowned German ship builder Lindenau Werft started building the ship and made its hull but left it incomplete and filed for bankruptcy. Later on the ship was completed by Cassens Werft. The ...
... ship uses Flettner rotors that help fast transport of the ship with the help of wind power energy. The principle of Magnus effect is the main working theory of the Flettner rotors. The rotors are four huge towers like masts on the deck of the ship that are connected mechanically to the ship’s propellers. The rotors work with the help of the wind power energy and the propellers create the Magnus effect in the water, thus propelling the ship onwards faster and more effectively.

To help you to understand how the E ship 1 is a faster moving ship than all other cargo ships in the world, let me explain the working of the rotors and the Magnus effect in a little more detail. Magnus effect states that when an object rotates it creates a force perpendicular to the direction of its movement. This force is what propels the ship forward and the rotating movement of the Flettner rotors is generated with the help of wind power energy. This process of moving the ship in the water is not only faster, it is safer too. It has been seen that this ship using Flettner rotors can stand against any weather conditions without giving any causes for concern.
