A modern digital floor scale does not use a mechanical device to measure the weight. Instead as its name suggests it uses an electric circuit to make the weight measurement. Now to the lay person this may seem not so easy to understand as to how an electric circuit can measure weight.

So let me explain briefly in a simple manner. We know that when a weight is placed on a sheet of material the sheet will deform slightly. That deformation can have important consequences. And scientists found out for a wire which is placed in a plane by looping it into a spiral, when the wire experiences a strain the resistance it offers changes. This change is related to the strain and if we can measure the change in the resistance we can know how much was the strain. We can then calculate the weight of the object causing the strain. For knowing the change in the resistance a Wheatstone bridge configuration is used. You may remember it from your school days. It is a simple way to know the value of an unknown resistance.

The strength of this current can easily be measured and by knowing that the change in the resistance can be calculated. Of course I say easily meaning that if you are using quality materials and components it is easy.
