Today one of the most discussed technology terms is “Wi-Fi”. People like to associate Wi-Fi with internet that is working in a wireless network. But the technology is offering more than just browsing the Internet. I have to say that Wi-Fi technology enables us to use Internet wherever we are. If we are in the office, cafeteria, cinema hall or in an airport, we can use Internet without any interruption.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is technically a trademarked brand name for the wireless standard owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data. Like television connection from providers like Charter Cable, communication across a wireless network is a two-way radio communication. With no physical connection between sender and receiver, Wi-Fi technology works on a frequency within the electromagnetic spectrum associated with radio wave propagation. Some fifteen years before we didn’t even thought about the possibility of listening music or downloading music when we are travelling. Wi-Fi has made it possible for us to do whatever we want to do with Internet.

The applications supported by Wi-Fi ...
... include video game consoles, home networks, mobile phones, certain operating systems and other consumer electronics. That means, if you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can wirelessly download photos, music, videos from your computer to your compatible television. You can also access data from blue-ray player and certain other devices. Isn’t it sounds interesting?

With the introduction of Wi-Fi enabled devices, wired devices are becoming an old story. Nowadays people are more interested in buying Wi-Fi enabled devices. Some of the advantages of Wi-Fi are –

Improved mobility and flexibility - The technology provides you more flexibility in using your electronic devices. Now you don’t have to worry about the four to five cords that interconnect your devices together. Wi-Fi can connect all the electronic devices, which is the next higher level of connectivity, without sacrificing design options. By having a Wi-Fi connection to products like network music player, you can hear music wherever you are in the house. The only thing you have to do is to connect your music player with speakers located at different locations. There are options to change the music while you are in one room and the music system is in the other room.

Easy to setup connection – Though the term “Wi-Fi” sounds really technical, it is not difficult to set up a wireless connection. It’s a pretty straightforward process. As you don’t have to drill any hole to run the wires, it’s much easy to install the connection. Most of the routers available with Wi-Fi are ‘plug and play’ connection. By just connecting to a power outlet or Ethernet cord, your Wi-Fi network is ready to use. Now you can connect your electronic devices to the wireless connectivity and enjoy the service.

Fast data transfer rates - The fastest commercially available Wi-Fi protocol in today’s market is 802.11. It can give a transfer speed of nearly 150 megabits. Along with this lighting speed, it can deliver streaming high-definition TV signals and CD quality audio. When certain Internet-ready devices can give you specific information like weather, sports or news, certain high end smart televisions and several other blue-ray players give you a fully functioning web browser almost similar to the ones you will find on computers.

Some of the disadvantages of the Wi-Fi connection can be security concerns and interference with other devices. If you are a person who is not that much worried about these disadvantages, then you can think about Wi-Fi as a modern alternative to networks that use cables. Wi-Fi can improve the usefulness of home computers and office computers. Think and plan about a Wi-Fi connection.
