When scales with mechanical weight measurement systems were prevalent, people were used to bulky and heavy designs specially of those scales which could measure very heavy objects. But with the advent of digital scales suddenly the bulk and weight went out of the weighing equipment. So what made this possible? Well if you were to hold the heart of a digital weighing scale in your hand you would not feel you were holding anything much at all. You will wonder how something so small and light can measure the weight of such heavy objects. And this is the technical brilliance of a strain gauge at work. A strain gauge is a special type of a resistor whose resistance changes when a load is placed on the strain gauge. And this change in resistance can be calibrated against known loads to be able to map the change to the weight of the object.

Of course things are not as simple as that. A strain gauge needs to change its resistance the same amount every time the weight is placed. If it is not consistent then the digital scale will not be consistent. And this change should be the same across variations in conditions such a temperature ...
... and humidity. And it is for this reason that you should buy a digital floor scale that has at its heart a strain gauge made by a well respected company.

And an easy way to do that is to choose a scale manufacturer that is well known for quality products that last for a long time and still are accurate. That way you will be able to enjoy the benefits of a slim and elegant floor scale without worrying that it may be a delicate electronic equipment which can get damaged easily. Of course you will have to make sure you follow the handling procedures and maintenance regime as advised by the manufacturer.

That strain gauges are a wonderful invention that is light and small but still as capable of heavy work load as bulky mechanical devices is proven by the fact the you can get digital NTEP scales which are tested exhaustively. You can see the latest digital scales at www.paylessscales.com.
