Sterilization is one of the processes that are extremely necessary in order to ensure proper sanitation. This process is not only important for ensuring food safety but is also helpful in medicine and other fields.
One of the things that are helpful in sterilization is the Autoclave. An autoclave is an instrument created by Charles Chamberland in 1879 that is used to sterilize equipment and supplies. This device works by subjecting equipments to high pressure saturated steam at 121 °C for around 15–20 minutes depending on the size of the load and the contents. The pressure and heat eliminates the bacteria, and other pathogens effectively which makes the autoclaves effective and helpful in microbiology, medicine, veterinary science, dentistry and more.
Autoclaves are available in several types and differ in size and function depending on the media to be sterilized. There are autoclaves that look like pressure cookers or sometimes as small as the size of a microwave oven which are normally used to sanitize small batches of equipments like ...
... laboratory glassware, surgical instruments or patient pair utensils. In many instances though, like in hospitals as well as in other large medical facilities, autoclaves work like dishwashers. These devices can process large numbers of surgical instruments in a single cycle or can be used to sanitize larger medical equipments. Preferably, these tend to be one-touch devices. That is, the specialist will be able to very easily fill the equipment, push the switch for that period to start, and easily regulate the entire procedure.
Undeniably, autoclaves are some of the instruments that can be considered a helpful product of the modern technology. These equipments make easier to ensure proper sanitation in a number of fields that need it. If used in the right manner, rest assured that these devices can be extremely helpful to the world where we live today.
