The iPod has become the premier symbol of the MP3 industry, and everywhere you journey to, you are sure to locate someone sporting the iconic white headphones, either at school, work, or the gym. When it was first released back in 2001, the innovative features and accessible controls were enough to persuade millions of customers to run out and order a device, paving the way for the digital market. Despite its success, it appears the iPhone has taken hold as Apple’s main consumer item, right beside its other largely popular product, the iPad. The MP3 player realm is slowly being controlled by the iPhone, leaving little room for the iPod to compete, especially with an all-in-one device Apple continues to turn out.

iPhone the New iPod

The first iPhone was praised for its sleek design and innovative features, and across all AT&T and Apple stores, the phone flew off the shelves. The iPhone may not have been the first phone on the market with a fully-operational touch screen, but it was the first product to include a touch screen and perfect it; past cell phones had clumsy touch screens and slow response times, ...
... and lacked any innovative features. Aside from its new touch-screen controls, the iPhone managed to take the best aspects of an iPod and jammed them into the phone to create an all-in-one device, and no longer did folks have to carry a phone and an iPod; now, they simply had their iPhone to have access to all of their music, contacts and personal information. Third-party manufacturers managed to revel in the prosperity of the iPhone as they pumped out new cases and skins for each new generation of items that managed to make its way to the masses. For example, case sellers would often try to make the best iPhone 3GS cases or the best soft covers to attract shoppers.

The newer iPods continue to take on technology placed inside of iPhones, but as more and more consumers decide on an iPhone, it will spell the end for the once popular MP3 player that provided innovative features and design. There once was a time where people would only take their iPods to the gym or office and use the MP3 products to replace the plain radio stations inside their cars, but the iPhone can do that and more. The iPod may not be extinct just yet, especially when companies make millions off of iPod cases and skins each year, but sooner or later, the product that helped revitalize the music business could disappear.
