According to movie news, Moneyball has a truly clever script, strong direction and some stellar performances. It’s based on a 2003 book by Michael Lewis entitled “Moneyball: The Art of Winning in an Unfair Game.” It’s all about Billy Beane, the General Manager of the Oakland A’s. He has an unusual formula for winning. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane in this upcoming movie - it’s the best role of his career. He exhibits the smooth certainty of actors Paul Newman or Robert Redford. This new movie release is going to do well at the box office. “Moneyball” is the best new baseball movie since “Bull Durham” and since it’s hitting theaters towards the end of the baseball season it’s going to bring in loads of viewers.
“Moneyball” is a reunion of sorts for a lot of the people who were involved in “The Social Network” including producers Michael DeLuca and Scott Rudin and Aaron Sorkin, screenwriter. This is yet another true story and it pays plenty of attention to important details and what goes on behind the scenes of baseball. ... so that we just don’t see a whole lot of baseball statistics. Sorkin and Steven Zaillian, original writer, do a good job of keeping the story all about Billy Beane, a kid who loved baseball and then follows a career all the way to the top. He manages to shock fans by firing stars and hiring new players in the strangest ways possible. A Yale grad, played by Jonah Hill, is given credit for Beane’s strange new ideas. Pete, played by Hill, ignores the power of the star players and pays attention to research, statistics and cheap players. Fans are going to love the parts of the movie where Pete, a decided non-athlete, explains his ideas to the veteran coach. But Pitt is the star of the movie and director Bennett Miller is great at weaving his story together, from the divorce of Beane to the troubles he has finding time to spend with his daughter.
Viewers will love Pitt. He’s engaging and clever and they’ll understand why he stuck with this project through the eight years it took to develop it and even through the firing of first director Steven Soderbergh a few days before filming started. This is a role for a movie star and movie star Pitt is great in it. Jonah Hill plays off Pitt well. The two are wonderful together and chances are that Hill will soon be moving away from just doing comedies. Philip Seymour Hoffman is perfect as the manager, a guy who isn’t open to change. Robin Wright has a small role as Beane’s ex-wife and Kerris Dorsey is delightful as Beane’s daughter. Reed Thompson does a good job of playing Pitt in flashbacks that show Beane in his 20’s. Baseball fans are going to adore “Moneyball” and everyone else is going to find it to be great entertainment as well!
