To standardize requirements for quality management the AS9100 guidelines were developed by key members of the aviation, defense, and space industries. The initial requirements, known as AS9100, were centered primarily on providing requirements for aerospace tool suppliers. The latest release, AS9100C, was released in January of 2009. It contains revised guidelines for AS9100 compliance as specified by the International Aerospace Quality Group. A comprehensive guide to these AS9100C revisions was published by the IAQG in June, 2009.

The key focus of these revisions was to accomplish the following objectives:

• Emphasize on product or service quality and delivery time frames.

• Maintain requirements for proven Quality Management System (QMS) Standards.

• Push the performance of a supplier to an advanced level and increase the rate of customer satisfaction.

• Updated demands from leading space aviation and defense organizations.

• Provide considerations and guidance for emerging environmental concerns.

• Stand for IAQG at the ISO (TC 176) for upcoming ...
... QMS actions.

• Hold up the International Aerospace Quality Group policy of, "90% of the supply chain being certified."

• Maintains and outlines Quality Management System audit practices.

• Works in harmony with relationship growth teams.

• Synchronization of customer needs and equipment evaluation for OEMs.

• Track the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of products for improved safety and cost controls.

• Works hand-in-hand with key National Trade Associations; including defense, space, and aviation authorities in these industries.

The developers of AS9100C have chalked out a transition plan for aerospace suppliers. It is mandatory for them to attend to training and certification programs for continued compliance. The OASIS, or Online Aerospace Supplier Information System, is used to distribute information to meet this rigorous IAQG standard. These systems will assist in tracking the activities of involved aerospace companies through proper registration and compliance monitoring of AS9100C requirements.
