Calling international numbers from a mobile phone can be an expensive business. When you call an international number from a standard contract or pay as you go cellphone, you must pay for two calls, one to your network and one from a foreign network, which is going to cost you a lot of money. Texts are not quite as expensive, but they are still charged at the maximum rate.

There are a few ways you can get around this, however. You could, for example, send an email instead, or take advantage of instant messaging services such as MSN Messenger. If you do not really feel the need to talk to someone personally, and they are on the web, then this is the easiest and cheapest method by a long way. However, if you would prefer to speak to the person, then there are a number of other steps that you can take.

Perhaps the easiest option is to swap your simcard for one that provides cheap international calls. While this may require you to unlock your phone, you only have to do this once, and it could save you both time and money.
